Professional Education Program Requirements 

    Application Deadlines:  September 22 and February 22 4:30 p.m., Room 469 CPS - Remember, the deadline is not the only date to turn things in, it is the last day to turn things in.

     

    The following requirements must be completed and scores received prior to turning in an application.  Applications available in the rack outside of room 469 CPS.  Unofficial transcripts from all colleges and technical colleges are required.  You should be able to get your "Course History" at MyPoint, which is your UWSP unofficial transcript.  You can go to the Records and Registration Office in the Student Services Center and order "transfer transcripts" for your non-UWSP transcripts, as long as you had your final transcripts sent and we received them.

     

  1. 40 Credits completed - this includes Advanced Placement (AP), CLEP, retroactive credits, transfer credits, and credits by exam
  2. 2.75 Cumulative GPA - this is based on credits earned at UWSP and ALL other institutions attended.
  3. 2.50 GPA in Freshman English - the 2.50 grade point would include the following grade combinations (for English 101 and 102): 'A-' and 'D+' or above; 'B+' and 'C-' or above; 'B' and 'C' or above; Test out in English 101 +'C' in 102. Students receiving a grade of 'C' or above in English 150 meet this requirement. Documentation of test out or exemption must be provided. If you do not have a 2.50 in Freshman English, report to the Undergraduate Advising Office (469 CPS) to obtain a Professional Writing Competency Program Brochure for clearance options available (this program usually takes a semester to complete).
  4. Watson-Barker Listening Test Competency - this test is given for free at the beginning of each semester. A passing score of 50% or higher is required.
  5. Speech and Hearing Screening - this screening is given for free at the beginning of each semester. There is no required passing score; however, remediation may be recommended if a problem exists.
  6. Praxis I (PPST) - The Praxis I is a standardized test designed to evaluate reading, writing, and math skills. Passing scores are required on all three sections. Communicative Disorders majors are exempt from this test!
  7. Pre-Professional Interview - this interview is required for any student seeking admission to the Early Childhood, Elementary, Physical, or Special Education programs. It is offered every month of the year, except July, in the School of Education.
  8. Technology Requirement - all students will be required to document knowledge of specific technology. Students who complete Education 205 with a grade of 'B-' or better meet this requirement. If Education 205 will not be completed by the application semester, a student may complete a UWSP School of Education Technology Workshop or provide documentation of the completion of a computer science course covering at least one of the following topics: Internet Research, PowerPoint, Word Processing & Spreadsheets.
  9. Major & Minor additional requirements- Each academic department, outside of the School of Education, has the ability to set additional application requirements. Students should contact the individual department of their major/minor to learn more about the additional requirements. 

Listening Test Dates

No Fee - Take this test once 26 credits have been completed.

 

The Listening Test will be held on the dates listed below. If you are not on time for this test, you will not be allowed to take it.

Pre-registration is not required. This test lasts approximately 50 minutes and is designed to check your listening comprehension skills. You must bring two writing tools. span style="font-weight: bold">Additional paper is not allowed. (NOTE: Students who have failed the test once or have received special permission to take it a second time must make a special appointment at least five days prior to the application deadline in Room 469 CPS.) Special accommodations are available for students with documented disabilities or English as a Second Language – consult personnel in Room 469 CPS.

Speech and Hearing Screening Dates

No Fee - Take this test once 26 credits have been completed.

 

The Speech and Hearing Screening will be conducted in the Communicative Disorders Department, Room 001 of the College of Professional Studies Building from 4:00 - 5:30 p.m. on these specific dates only:

Pre-registration is not required. This screening takes approx. 15 minutes and is on a first-come, first served basis. A passing score is not required.

Pre-Professional Skills/Praxis I Test Dates

Fee: $130-$170

 

The Praxis I test is conducted by the ETS Company and is designed to evaluate reading, writing, and math skills. It is recommended that students take the test at least 4 months prior to the SOE application deadline, in case of the need for a retake. Scores take 4-6 weeks to be sent. Registration information is available at: www.ets.org. There are 2 versions of this test.

 

Computer Version:

 

Cost is $130 (all in one day)-$160 (not all in one day). Subject to change.

 

You can schedule the computer version of the Praxis I at the ETS website, www.ets.org/praxis o or by calling your preferred testing site.  UWSP Testing Services Office offers the Praxis I computer version Monday through Friday and is located on the third floor of Delzell Hall.  Appointments are limited. We suggest calling 4 - 6 weeks in advance of your desired test date.

Written version:

 Cost is $170.  Subject to change.

 

Written tests are offered on specific dates listed below and ETS must receive your registration by the registration deadline.

Note:  Accommodations for test takers whose primary language is not English are only offered on 1/14/12 and 4/28/12.

 

Required Passing Scores for the PPST are: Reading 175, Writing 174, Math 173.

Praxis I Preparation Program

 

Each semeter, the SOE Advising, Recruitment & Retention Office offers a free practice program for the Praxis I.  For more details, visit the Resources section of the SOE Newsletter.

Pre-Professional Interview Information

REMINDER - Early Childhood, Elementary, Physical or Special Education Majors planning on applying to the Professional Education Program in September should Take the Pre-Professional Interview by September 21, 2011.  Students planning on applying to the Program in February 2012 should take the interview between September 25 and December 9, 2011.  Come in now for an appointment! 

 

Fee: $30

 

The Pre-Professional Interview is required for all students majoring in Elementary Education, Early Childhood Education, Physical or Special Education. This one-on-one interview lasts approximately 30 minutes. The fee is $30.00. Dates and times for interviews are available at the beginning of each semester and prior to the Professional Education application deadlines. Interviews will be available every month except for July. Current students must bring $30.00 to 469 CPS to register for the interview. Students not currently registered at UWSP may call our office to register.

Technology Workshop Dates

No Fee

 

This workshop is for those students needing to meet the technology requirement to apply to the Professional Education Program. The Technology Workshops will be given in August, September, January, and February. There is no fee for the Technology Workshop. Students must register through the School of Education Advising, Recruitment & Retention Office 24 hours prior to the start of the workshop date, 715-346-2040, room 469 CPS to attend the workshop.

 

NOTE: If you have completed Educ 205 with a grade of "B-" or better by the application deadline, you do not need this workshop. All students must complete Education 205 prior to student teaching.

Changes to Enrollment Cap Policies

 

Changes to the Social Science Enrollment Cap Policy (begins Sept. 2011)

The Enrollment Cap Policy for the Social Science majors/minors will be changing beginning with the September 22, 2011 Application Deadline.

 

Starting with the Fall 2011 semester - All Social Science majors/minors who will be applying to the Professional Education Program must meet the new application requirements!

 

The largest change to the Social Science Enrollment Cap Policy requires a student to earn a 3.00 in-major GPA.

Waiver Policy (Praxis I, GPA & Pre-Professional Interview)

Waivers for the Pre-Professional Interview, PPST and GPA requirements are granted prior to application to Professional Education and do not change your scores or grade point average. Waivers allow a student to apply without meeting minimum requirements. Minimum requirements on either PPST scores or GPA must be met to request a waiver of the other. Waiver requests are reviewed at the beginning of every semester for students with extenuating circumstances. Waiver forms with deadline dates of February 7 (February 5 in 2010 as February 7 falls on a Sunday) and September 11 are due to room 469 CPS by 4:30 p.m. of the date.

PPST Score Waiver Requirements

    1. You have taken and received scores for the PPST at least twice.
    2. Your scores do not exceed a 9 point deviation from the cut off.
    3. You have grades of 3.0 or above in related coursework.
    4. You have an overall GPA from all institutions of at least 2.75.
    5. You have completed 40 credits of instruction.
    6. You have attached copies of each attempt of your PPST results and transcripts from all institutions attended.
    7. You have attached a letter explaining your reasons for requesting a waiver.

 

Grade Point Waiver Requirement

    1. You have passed all three parts of the PPST.
    2. You have completed at least 40 credits of instruction with a grade point of 2.75 or better.
    3. Your grades show significant improvement over a minimum of two consecutive semesters.
    4. You have attached copies of your latest PPST results and transcripts from all institutions attended.
    5. You have attached a letter explaining your reasons for requesting a waiver.

 

Pre-Professional Interview Waiver Requirements

    1. You have taken and received failing scores for the Interview at least twice.
    2. You have an overall gpa from all institutions of at least 2.75.
    3. You have attached copies of the latest PPST results and transcripts from all institutions attended.
    4. You have attached a letter explaining reasons for requesting waiver.

 

Results will be mailed within 5 working days of deadlines. Requests with incomplete paperwork will not be processed. If you do not receive a response within 5 working days, please contact the School of Education Advising, Recruitment & Retention Office immediately.
