New Broadfield Language Arts license offered

Beginning this semester, the UWSP English Department is offering a new teaching option leading to a the 301 license in Broadfield Language Arts.  This license will qualify teachers to teach general-level classes in speech and journalism.  This option accompanies the existing English Education curriculum, which leads to the 300 license in Literature and Composition.

BENEFITS OF QUALIFYING FOR A 301 LICENSE

  •  It allows you to pursue your interest in speech and journalism.
  •  It prepares you to teach and advise in areas in which many English teachers do, in any case, work.
  •  It increases your marketability by increasing the competencies which you can offer a school district.

REQUIREMENTS LEADING TO THE 301 LICENSE

  • You must complete the existing English Education curriculum, which leads to the 300 license.  Thus, once you have completed both the English Education curriculum and the Broadfield Language Arts option, you will qualify for BOTH the 300 and the 301 licenses.
  •  You must complete an additional 15 credits of work.  Some of this work is in the Division of Communications; some is in the Theatre Department; and some is in English Education.  Work includes three academic classes and four classes of hands-on work, including two field experiences.  Thus it's important to time your classes thoughtfully: field experiences work best when you spread them out.  If you are interested in this option, you should start the practical and field experience classes as soon as possible.
  •  Note: If you have a major or minor in Communications, you may be able to overlap some requirements.

NEXT STEPS

If you are interested in this possibility, see your English Education advisor.  To begin a field experience class this semester, add English Education 395, and contact Dr. Barbara Dixson.

We are excited about this new option and look forward to working with you!

Education 200- sections 3 and 4 – Time has changed

Education 200, sections 3 and 4 will now meet 14:30-16:00 – See timetable for changes.

ECE Major Changes

After careful planning, the ECE faculty are proposing some changes to the ECE major. They are planning on sending these changes through faculty governance and expect to have them approved. I have outlined how this affects current students, depending on their circumstances.

  1.  Human Development 360
    a. If you are in Human Development 360 this semester - you must keep HD 360 in your schedule.
    b. If you have not yet had Human Development 360 - you will no longer need to take this course.

  2.  English 274
    a. If you have already taken English 274(or an approved equivalent), you will take ECE 366 during your ICB Block for 2 credits as currently outlined in your graduation plan. ECE 366 will be offered spring 2012 and spring 2013. It will not be offered after that.
    b. If you have already taken ECE 366 (or its equivalent at a different school) or are in the course now, and have not yet taken English 274 (or an approved equivalent) - you will still need either English 274 or 275.
    c. If you have not had either English 274/275 OR ECE 366 - you will take a new course through the ICB Block, ECE 372, for 3 credits in place of ECE 366 during ICB and will not need English 274 (or an approved equivalent). We will begin to offer this new course, ECE 372, as part of the ICB Block starting Spring 2012.

If these changes affect you and you have questions, please see Maggie Beeber during Open Advising. You may also come in to redo your graduation plan.

Exceptional Education Majors - Education 397-This Course Will Meet the Writing Emphasis Requirement by the End of the Fall Semester.

You may have noticed that Education 397 in the fall 2011 timetable is not currently listed as WE, even though we have been advising you that it would meet one of your WE requirements. Dr. Bardon is new to this course and will start training to be a WE instructor in August. WE will change this course over to WE as soon as she has completed training, later in the fall. Please plan on this course meeting one of your WE requirements to graduate.
