KEEP is a program of the Wisconsin Center for Environmental Education (WCEE). The WCEE offers environmental education courses that qualify for Wisconsin continuing education credits including these KEEP courses (click on these links to read course descriptions as well as to register):

NRES 730 - Energy Education in the Classroom

 

Description: Energize your classroom! Through hands-on activities and class discussions learn how you can enhance students' understanding of what energy is, where it comes from, and how it affects their lives. You will also receive a copy of the KEEP Activity Guide, a comprehensive, easy-to-use guide, and be introduced to additional energy-related educational materials. This course is designed for teachers who want to experience it today and teach it tomorrow. Applicable to teachers of Science/Mathematics, Social Studies, Language Arts, Technology Education, Family Living and Consumer Education (FCE), or to anyone who wants to promote energy as part of their environmental education curriculum.

 

Goals: As a result of participating in NRES 730, participants will:

Cost: Focus on Energy and select Wisconsin utilities provide scholarships, and participants pay a co-pay. The course includes one graduate credit from UWSP (and all materials) to participants who are practicing K-12 teachers from Wisconsin schools in their territories.

 

Expectations: Participants are responsible for paying the co-pay, attending the course, peer teaching from the KEEP Activity Guide during the course, and completing a class assignment to be turned in by an arranged date after the course. The assignment is designed to have teachers create a product that will support their efforts to integrate energy concepts into their classroom lessons.

These courses build on NRES 730 and offers the next step in hands-on activities and class discussions that focus on a certain topic, subject, or application. This course number can be repeated on different topics for up to three credits.

NRES 732 - Renewable Energy Education in the Classroom

Description: This course offers renewable energy hands-on activities, class discussions, and classroom-based applications to help teachers analyze energy information and create strategies and techniques to enhance their students' understanding of renewable energy. The course highlights a renewable energy curriculum designed for  teachers to use in their classrooms. Recommended for teachers of grades 5-12, adaptable to younger grades. 

 

Course Goals: As a result of participating in NRES 732, students will:

NRES 732: Doable Renewables: Renewable Energy Education in the Classroom course web support

 

NRES 733 - Energy Education: Concepts and Practices - Online Course

 

Description: Energy Education: Concepts and Practices is a web-based course (Internet delivery) offered through the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point and developed by the Wisconsin K-12 Energy Education Program (KEEP). The website component of this course is always open to the general public with course content geared primarily for K-12 educators. At certain times of the year, there is university credit available for this course, see Schedule Information or contact the KEEP office. See Registration Information to find out how to register. Enrolled students also participate in an interactive online discussion and complete assignments. On-campus students need instructor permission to enroll in this course. The course addresses energy concepts relating to energy definitions, natural laws of energy, energy flows in living and non-living systems, and their relationships to understanding and evaluating environmental issues.

Course activities include exploration of energy readings and pertinent websites, online discussions, and home activities, such as reading utility bills, home energy audits, and calculating the wattages of various home appliances.

Goal: As a result of participating in NRES 733, participants will gain a fundamental knowledge about energy and appreciate the nature of energy in their every day lives. 

Cost: Focus on Energy and select Wisconsin utilities provide scholarships, (includes one graduate credit from UWSP) to participants who are practicing K-12 teachers from Wisconsin schools in their territories. Participants pay a co-pay.

 

Expectations: Participants are responsible for paying the co-pay, participating in the course and completing a class assignment to be turned in by an arranged date after the course. The assignment is designed to help you integrate energy into your classroom.

NRES 734 - School Building Energy Efficiency Education

 

Description: Know the flow of energy in your school building! This course focuses on evaluating the energy use in school buildings and guiding K-12 teachers towards utilizing the school building as a learning tool for energy education. Take an informative tour of a school building's energy systems and learn how you and your students can make a difference on your school's utility bill. Each participant will receive an Energy and Your School Activity Guide with 14 K-12 activities. Participants in the course will develop action plans or unit plans highlighting opportunities in energy efficiency and conservation in their schools.

 

Goal: As a result of participating in NRES 734, teachers will learn…

·         The basic energy systems within a school building

·         How schools consume and are billed for energy use

·         How building occupants can reduce energy consumption

·         Ways to incorporate energy systems into curriculum

·         How to develop an effective energy action plan

·         Who to communicate with for energy-related needs

 

Cost: Focus on Energy and select Wisconsin utilities provide scholarships, and participants pay a co-pay. The course includes one graduate credit from UWSP (and all materials) to participants who are practicing K-12 teachers from Wisconsin schools in their territories.

 

Expectations: Participants are responsible for paying the co-pay, attending the course and completing a class assignment to be turned in by an arranged date after the course. The assignment is designed to have teachers create a product that will support their efforts to initiate energy efficiency plans in their school buildings and energy education concepts in their classrooms.

 

NRES 734 is only open to teachers in the district where it is being held because it is specific to each district's energy goals. If you are interested in a NRES 734 course in your district please complete the NRES 734 Course Request Form.

Energy Education Certificate Available through the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point

CertificateIf you are looking for ways to enhance your teaching portfolio and to verify your professional development in energy education, you may be interested in the opportunity to earn a certificate in energy education through the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. The Energy Education Certificate is available to practicing K-12 teachers only. The certificate reflects comprehensive professional development and experiences in energy content and teaching competencies. The certificate is awarded after completing at least three Wisconsin K-12 Energy Education Program courses and providing evidence of involvement in at least three energy education activities.  Please use the following form to submit your application:

NOTE: The certificate does not certify the recipient for any degree nor is it part of any licensing program or requirements; rather, it supports and documents preparations and improvements in level of success in an area of practice—in this case energy education.  Achievement for the certificate can be verified through examination of a transcript showing courses completed and is directly associated with the quality control asserted within the overall academic institution.
