• Comprehensive Planning in Wisconsin: Status of Current Planning Efforts (2006) (18 pages, 292 KB)
  In May 2006, the UW-Extension Community Planning and Plan Implementation Team conducted a survey of Extension professionals to learn more about comprehensive planning efforts throughout the state. There were three purposes for the survey: to gauge the current status of comprehensive planning efforts in Wisconsin counties and municipalities, to understand UW-Extension’s involvement in those efforts, and to identify challenges and educational needs faced by communities that have not yet begun to plan.
   
• Community Planning Survey Results (2004) (36 pages, 345 KB)
  In January 2004, the Center for Land Use Education (CLUE) initiated a state-wide online survey of planning professionals. The purpose of the survey was two-fold: to document the varied experiences of Wisconsin communities with planning and to improve research and outreach activities conducted by CLUE and other organizations that provide support for local planning initiatives.
   

• Conservation Easements

  • The River Owner’s Handbook and the Conservation Easement brochure were developed through a grant from the Community Foundation of Central Wisconsin, to assist the Plover River Alliance in acquiring conservation easements along the Plover River corridor in Portage County, Wisconsin.  The immediate goal of these publications is to educate landowners living along the river corridors on the benefits of conservation easements and to describe the best conservation methods developed for riparian lands.   These publications also address issues on the long-term benefit of various types of preservation techniques, and frequently asked questions concerning shoreland protection.  This publication was designed to benefit the Plover River, as well as riverine systems throughout Wisconsin.

    These publications can be used as educational tools on the water quality benefits that can be gained through conservation practices along riparian corridors for both individuals and watershed organizations throughout Wisconsin.  This publication can be printed and redistributed to any individual who is concerned and/or interested in learning about protecting the aesthetic beauty, water quality and overall landscape in and around a water resource.

• How to Hire a Planning Consultant. If your community is considering hiring a planning consultant to prepare your comprehensive plan or one element of it, this guidebook is for you. It is geared more towards small communities in Wisconsin, but should be helpful to all communities undertaking this process. It is a step-by-step guide on how to prepare a "Request for Proposal" to hire a planning consultant.
   
• Protecting Your Waterfront Investment :  10 Simple Shoreland Stewardship Practices
  2005.  Healthy watersheds make healthy lakes and higher property values -- this booklet show how property owners can take simple steps to curb pollutants, cut runoff, and capture and cleanse pollutant-carrying runoff before it reaches a waterway. 20 pages.
   
• Shoreland Development Density and Impervious Surfaces (19 pages, 502KB)
   
• Spatial Implications of a Wood Gasification System at UWSP (33 pages, 3.14MB).  This report explains a new model for calculating logging residue availability in Wisconsin.  The Center for Land Use Education and the College of Natural Resources at UWSP designed and performed this study to use Geographic Information Systems technology to investigate biomass as a feedstock to replace UW-Stevens Point's coal and natural gas consumption.

• The Shoreland Friends Guidebook Volume 1 (472 KB).  This volume of the guidebook serves as a 'how-to' guide for County Zoning Administrators and local groups that want to educate shoreland property owners about shoreland stewardship practices and related regulations.  Free.
   
• The Shoreland Friends Guidebook Volume 2 (980 KB).  This volume provides shoreland educational plans for 10 Wisconsin counties and the process they went through to develop them.  Free.
   
• Water Classification CD. This CD of educational materials includes fact sheets, PowerPoint presentations and decision matrices which have been used by local communities involved in water classification or related issues such as buffer protection and the effects of impervious surfaces on water quality. • Zoning (34 pages, 2647 KB). Adapted by Kevin Struck, UW-Extension.  Zoning is one tool used to carry out community goals and objectives as set forth in a comprehensive or land use plan.  This compilation by Struck covers such topics as zoning powers and developing a zoning ordinance to extraterritorial zoning.  Free.
