September 17, 2002 Jagiellonian
University and UW-Stevens Point Mark 25th year
The University
of Wisconsin-Stevens Points (UWSP) College of Natural Resources
(CNR) marked a milestone this summer with one of Europes oldest
and most prestigious universities.
Jagiellonian
University in Krakow, Poland, founded in 1634, has for the past 25
years been a key player in one of the nations largest
undergraduate study-abroad programs. Hans Schabel, professor of
forestry and director of the International Resource Management
program at UWSP, represented the CNR and International Programs at
the July ceremony in Poland.
Schabel was
awarded the Medal of the Refounding of the Krakow Academy in a
ceremony commemorating the two universities close ties over the
years. May it (Medal of the Refounding) be a symbol of cordial,
long-term contacts between Jagiellonian University and the
University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, said Franciszek Ziejka,
rector at Jagiellonian University. May it especially
commemorate the 25th group from the College of Natural
Resources to Poland and your invaluable contribution to this
program.
The ceremony
took place in the Aula of Collegium Maius, the oldest auditorium
on the Krakow campus. In addition to Schabel, numerous
study-abroad program students and Central Wisconsin Environmental
Station (CWES) director, Patty Dreier, also were in attendance.
Having led
numerous student trips to Krakow, I am indeed honored to have
represented both the university and the CNR, said Schabel.
This international experience has met and exceeded all
expectations and the students are the real benefactors of this
cross-cultural learning experience.
Since 1975 more
than 1,300 CNR students have studied abroad in Poland and Germany
immersing themselves in the local politics, history, language and
culture.
Pauline
Isaacson, founder in 1969 of UWSPs international programs, was
honored by Jagiellonian University last year. She was awarded the
Medal of the 600th Anniversary of the Krakow Academy
Refounding.
