Enjoy Perfect Start at NCAA Division III Championships It was a perfect first day for the UW-Stevens Point wrestling team as all four of the Pointers national qualifiers posted two wins apiece and advanced to the semifinals of their respective weight classes at the NCAA Division III championships in Ada, Ohio. Brady Holtz, Cody Koenig, Brad Marten and Yan White pushed the Pointers into fourth place in the team standings after the first day with 38 team points, which trails third place Montclair State (N.J.) by two and a half points. Wartburg (Iowa) is in control with 94.5 points and nine wrestlers in the semifinals. Augsburg (Minn.) is in second place with 51 points. All four Pointer wrestlers are assured of finishing at least sixth in their weight class and earning All-American honors. It marks the fourth time in school history and first time since 1997 the Pointers have had four All-Americans in one season. Holtz pulled off the biggest surprises of the day at 133 pounds, upending second-seeded Ralph Acosta of Upper Iowa 9-4 in the first round and then knocking off seventh-seeded Daniel Roberts of Brockport State (N.Y.) 7-4 in the quarterfinals. Holtz will next face third-seeded Ozzie Saxon of Wartburg in the semifinals. Koenig, the No. 2 seed at 174 pounds, ran his record to 34-0 for the season and beat Wartburgs Mark Sturm for the third time this year with a 7-1 win in the quarterfinals. He opened the day with a 53-second pin over Tom Andrews of Loras (Iowa) and will have to face another wrestler hes beaten twice this season in the semifinals against Joe Moon of Augsburg. Marten, the second seed at 184 pounds, beat Aaron Yoches of Case Western Reserve (Ohio) 16-6 in the opening round and then decisioned David Hirt of Wheaton (Ill.) 3-1 in the quarterfinals. The junior will have a rematch with Augsburgs Ricky Crone in the semifinals, having beat Crone 7-1 just three weeks ago. White, the top seed and defending champion at 197 pounds, used a similar path on the opening day as last year, beating College of New Jerseys Rich Gildner in the quarterfinals for the second straight year. White won this years match 5-3 and also beat Augsburgs Justin Sorenson for the third time this season with an 8-2 win in the first round. He will face Justin Torres of Olivet (Mich.) in the semifinals.Check out the Brackets at the Official NCAA Division III Wrestling Website |
