Pointers Stymied Again by Forester Goaltending

Box Score

For the second straight day, UW-Stevens Point was unable to solve a Lake Forest goaltender as the Foresters beat the Pointers in 29 all-time meetings with a 3-1 win on Saturday at Ice Hawks Arena.

The Pointers outshot Lake Forest 35-14, but Foresters goalie Ryann McCarthy was nearly perfect in the victory. UW-Stevens Point also was unable to score on eight power play chances, including a five-on-three power play for 1:23 over the end of the first period and start of the second. The Foresters scored two of their goals on the power play and also added an empty net goal for their first win over the Pointers. UW-Stevens Point now leads the all-time series 24-1-4.

The win came one day after Foresters' goalie Sally Bevis had 42 saves in a 1-1 tie and clinched the Foresters a Northern Collegiate Hockey Association playoff berth as they improved to 10-5-6 overall and 5-3-5 in the conference. UW-Stevens Point clinched a berth in the playoffs on Friday, but will not win a third straight conference title as it dropped to 14-6-2 overall and 6-5-2 in the NCHA.

The Pointers held an 11-2 advantage in shots in the first period, but Lake Forest scored on one of its two chances when Allison Rushing launched a long shot from the point through a group of defenders.

The Foresters went ahead 2-0 in the second period when Katie Snowden was in the perfect spot on the opposite side of the net to slam in a rebound off a shot by Rushing.

UW-Stevens Point pulled its goalie with 3:51 left in the game and Lake Forest scored just 37 seconds later on a shot from Laura Wilson that traveled the length of the ice. The Pointers kept the extra attacker on the ice and it resulted in a goal by Katy Lankey with 1:03 left in the game.

The Pointers conclude their season next week when they travel to Finlandia on Friday and Saturday.
