Groshek Named to Verizon Academic All-District
Team
University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point junior Kari Groshek has been
selected as a first-team All-District selection to the Verizon women's
basketball All-Academic team.
Groshek, a Rosholt native, carries a 3.75 grade point average in
Biology and is now eligible for Academic All-American honors. She was also
selected to the All-Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference first
team and the WIAC All-Defensive team earlier this week.
The team consists of all NCAA Division II,
NCAA Division III and NAIA players from Wisconsin, Minnesota, Illinois and
Indiana. She was one of 66 players nominated from across the district and
is now eligible for Academic All-American accolades.
"She's a phenomenal kid," Pointers' coach Shirley Egner
said. "It's all about her work ethic and she will not be denied
anything."
Groshek rallied from a knee injury that caused her to miss nearly
all of the 1999-2000 season to lead the Pointers this season at 15.8
points per game, while also grabbing 6.8 rebounds per game. She is heavily
involved in honor societies and activities within her major and works at
the UW-Stevens Point strength center.
She was the Most Valuable Player of this season's Terry Porter
Tipoff Tournament and has been named to the tournament's All-Classic team
four times in her career. Groshek has been a three-year starter and was a
team captain.
"It speaks volumes about who she is and everything she is
involved with," Egner added. "How many kids do you know who can
carry the grades she does, be involved in all those activities, play
basketball at her level and still hold down a job?"
All five members of the first team are Biology majors and Groshek
was the only player from Wisconsin honored. Other first-team selections
were Emily Birkholz of Minnesota State-Mankato, Alison Grubbs of Lake
Forest (Ill.), Jamie Kingsley of Augsburg (Minn.) and Amber Kuhrts of
Monmouth (Ill.). UW-Oshkosh's Jamie Turtenwald was a third-team selection. |
