Ellis Claims High Jump Title at WIAC Outdoor Meet

Mitch Ellis captured the individual title in the mens high jump as UW-Stevens Points lone titlist at the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference outdoor track and field championships Saturday in Oshkosh.

The Pointer mens team placed fifth with 75 points, while the womens team was sixth with 70 points. UW-La Crosse won the mens title with 247 points and UW-Oshkosh claimed the womens championship with 231 points.

Ellis, the two-time defending league champion in the indoor high jump, won his first career outdoor championship with a leap of six feet, five inches. Nick VerDuin added a second place finish in the 200-meter dash with an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 21.63 seconds. Kyle Scofield was third in the shot put at 51 feet, 11.25 inches.

Jenna Mitchler had two high finishes for the womens team and came just short in one of the days most exciting finishes. She was second in the 1500-meter run, placing less than one second behind UW-Plattevilles Marcia Taddy with a time of 4:30.7 in a race that featured two of the four fastest times run in the NCAA Division III this season. Mitchler was also third in the 800-meter run in 2:16.67.

The womens 1600-meter relay bettered its NCAA provisional time with a third place effort in 3:56.89. The mens 1600-meter relay was also third with a time of 3:17.97.
