Ellis Leads Pointers at NCAA Indoor Meet

Junior Mitch Ellis finished sixth in the men's high jump Friday night to lead UW-Stevens Point at the NCAA Division III Track and Field Championships in Northfield, Minn.

Ellis and fellow junior Kyle Steiner entered the meet as the first and seconds seeds overall in the high jump, however both of them jumped six feet, 7.5 inches. The second through eighth place finishers jumped six feet, 7.5 inches, and the places were determined by number of faults. Ellis had fewer faults than Steiner to place six and while Steiner finished eighth. Andy Stoecken of Loras won the event with a jump of six feet, 11 inches.

On the women's side, Jenna Mitchler set a new track record as she won the mile prelims in 4:57.69. Mitchler, the defending national champion in the 800-meter run, also competed in the 800-meter prelims, however results were not available.

Mitchler will compete in the mile finals tomorrow afternoon at 4:30 p.m. The women's and men's 4x400 relay teams will also compete with the men's starting at 7:40 and the women following at 7:55 p.m.

The meet continues Saturday with events starting at 10:00 a.m.
