Newport and
Roskopf Named WIAC Swimming and Diving Scholar Athletes
After sweeping both the men�s and women�s
Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference swimming and diving
championships last weekend, UW-Stevens Point also landed both of the
league�s scholar athlete award winners as Garth Newport won the men�s
award and Jennie Roskopf shared the women�s honor.
Newport is the seventh UW-Stevens Point
swimmer to win the men�s award in the last 11 years, while Roskopf is
the Pointers� fifth female winner in the past seven years. Roskopf
shared her award this year with UW-La Crosse�s Carlene Empanger.
Newport, a senior from Berlin, maintains a 3.94 grade point average
while double-majoring in economics and business administration. A
second-team Academic All-District selection last season, Newport is a
three-time member of the WIAC Scholastic Honor Roll and has earned
highest honors from UW-Stevens Point six semesters. He has also been
awarded the Seramor Scholarship from the Division of Business and
Economics, along with the Sentry Insurance Leadership Scholarship.
Newport, a two-time team captain, helped UW-Stevens Point to its
seventh straight league title last weekend at the conference
championships, winning the 100-yard butterfly and 100-yard backstroke
titles. He is a four-time individual conference champion and has been a
member of six winning relay squads. Newport is a two-time All-American
and five-time honorable mention All-American.
Roskopf, a senior from West Bend East High School, carries a 3.45
grade point average and is majoring in psychology with a minor in
coaching. She is a three-time selection to the WIAC Scholastic Honor
Roll and has received Honors and High Honors from her institution.
Roskopf, a team captain this year, helped UW-Stevens Point to the
conference title last weekend after winning the 100-yard breaststroke
and 200-yard breaststroke titles. She is a six-time individual
conference champion and four-time member of a winning relay
team. Roskopf also holds the league record and school record in the
200-yard medley relay. She is a three-time honorable mention
All-American selection.
