Pointer Men and Women Lead
WIAC Swimming and Diving Championships After Day One
UW-Stevens Point men's and
women's swimming and diving teams won eight of 12 events Thursday to to
take the lead after day one of the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic
Conference championships in Minneapolis.
The six-time defending champions Pointer men's
team has 273 points with UW-La Crosse in second with 224 points. The
Pointer women's team has 265 points, as they lead the four-time
defending women's champion, UW-La Crosse with 206.5 points.
Both teams opened with victories in the
200-yard freestyle. The men's team of Alex Anderson, Kyle Hartl,
Tyler Eloranta and Chase Gross won in 1:23.74. The women's team of
Jerica Crook, Beth Bard, Kelsey Crunstedt and Caitlin Hake posted a
conference record time of 1:36.43.
Anderson claimed his third straight title in
the 200-yard individual medley. Willy Clapp, Garth Newport, Eloranta and
Anderson won the 400-yard Medley Relay in 3:26.49. Gross,
Eloranta, and Hartl finished in the top three spots in the 50-yard
freestyle, as Gross won in 21.28.
Freshman Abby Strobel won the 200-yard
individual medley in and conference and school record time of 2:10.09. The Pointer's qualified six women in the
50-yard freestyle finals as Hake won the event in 24.21. Crunstedt
and Crook finished third and fourth respectively. Liz Herder, Meghan
Walsh, Jennie Roskopf and Hake won the 400-yard medley relay at 3:55.65.
The meet continues Friday and Saturday.
