Men�s Swimmers Look for National Meet Success
After five weeks off, the UW-Stevens Point
men�s swimming and diving team is anxious to return to the University of
Minnesota Aquatic Center to carry its Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic
Conference meet success into the NCAA Division III Championships on
March 16-18.
The Pointers won their seventh straight
conference championship on the weekend of Feb. 9-11 in Minneapolis and
return to the same pool for this weekend�s championships. UW-Stevens
Point placed 12th at last year�s meet and has been in the top 20 three
straight years.
Senior Alex Anderson leads eight UW-Stevens
Point qualifiers with the nation�s top seed in the 100-yard breaststroke
with a time of 56.10 seconds. Anderson is also the fifth-seed in the
200-yard breaststroke at 2:04.47. Sophomore Ben Gensler is the
third-seed in the same event after claiming the WIAC championship in
2:03.97.
A trio of relay teams also enters the meet as
top 10 seeds. The 200-yard medley team of Willie Clapp, Anderson, Garth
Newport and Chase Gross won the WIAC championship and enter as the
seventh seed at 1:33.75. The 400-yard medley team of Clapp, Anderson,
Newport and Eloranta is the 10th seed with a time of 3:26.49. The WIAC
champion 400-yard freestyle relay team of Matt Grunwald, Tyler Eloranta,
Gross and Anderson is tied for the 10th-seed at 3:04.98.
Freshman Rob Donisch will be competing in the
200-yard individual medley, 100-yard butterfly and the 200-yard
butterfly.
Kenyon (Ohio) is the 26-time defending
national champion and the favorite again this year. The meet runs
Thursday through Saturday with prelims each morning and finals in the
evening.
