Well-Rested Mens Swimmers Look for National Meet Success

After five weeks off, the UW-Stevens Point mens swimming and diving team is anxious to return to the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center to carry its Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference meet success into the NCAA Division III Championships on March 16-18.

The Pointers won their seventh straight conference championship on the weekend of Feb. 9-11 in Minneapolis and return to the same pool for this weekends championships. UW-Stevens Point placed 12th at last years meet and has been in the top 20 three straight years.

Senior Alex Anderson leads eight UW-Stevens Point qualifiers with the nations top seed in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 56.10 seconds. Anderson is also the fifth-seed in the 200-yard breaststroke at 2:04.47. Sophomore Ben Gensler is the third-seed in the same event after claiming the WIAC championship in 2:03.97.

A trio of relay teams also enters the meet as top 10 seeds. The 200-yard medley team of Willie Clapp, Anderson, Garth Newport and Chase Gross won the WIAC championship and enter as the seventh seed at 1:33.75. The 400-yard medley team of Clapp, Anderson, Newport and Eloranta is the 10th seed with a time of 3:26.49. The WIAC champion 400-yard freestyle relay team of Matt Grunwald, Tyler Eloranta, Gross and Anderson is tied for the 10th-seed at 3:04.98.

Freshman Rob Donisch will be competing in the 200-yard individual medley, 100-yard butterfly and the 200-yard butterfly.

Kenyon (Ohio) is the 26-time defending national champion and the favorite again this year. The meet runs Thursday through Saturday with prelims each morning and finals in the evening.
