Men Capture Sixth Straight
WIAC Title; Women Take Second
UW-Stevens Point captured its sixth consecutive Wisconsin
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men�s swimming and diving title on
Saturday as Alex Anderson and Tyler Eloranta finished off perfect
meets by each winning all seven of their events over the weekend in
Whitewater.
The duo teamed with
Aaron Marshall and Matt Grunwald to finish off the meet with a victory
in the 400-yard freestyle relay in 3:07.46. Anderson added a win in
the 200-yard breaststroke for the second time in three years in a time
of 2:06.77 and Eloranta claimed the 100-yard freestyle in 47.47
seconds. Marshall was second in the event for his third runner-up
finish of the meet.
Grunwald posted his
third consecutive title in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of
1:54.33 as the Pointers rolled up 1,328 team points. UW-La Crosse was
second with 1,013 points.
While the men
continued their streak, the Pointer women suffered their fourth
consecutive close loss to UW-La Crosse, totaling 1,247 points to fall
50.5 points short of the Eagles. UW-Stevens Point has been within 51
points of the Eagles each of the past four years.
Jennie Roskopf
successfully defended her 200-yard breaststroke title with a time of
2:29.08 and Jenna Gilbertson swam to victory in the 200-yard
backstroke in 2:11.02 for the lone Pointer victories on Saturday.

Pointer Men Close in on Sixth Straight WIAC Title

Anderson and Tyler Eloranta each captured another individual title as
the UW-Stevens Point men�s swimming and diving team extended its first
place lead at the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference
championships in Whitewater.
The five-time defending
champion Pointers now have 860 points after two days of the three-day
event. UW-La Crosse is second with 698 points. The Pointer women�s team
is still chasing UW-La Crosse as UW-Stevens Point has 844 points, while
the Eagles lead with 933.5 points.
Anderson won the
100-yard breaststroke in 56.72 seconds and swam on the winning 200-yard
medley relay with Travis Wolf, Garth Newport and Aaron Marshall in
1:34.36 to give him five titles already for the meet. Eloranta claimed
the 200-yard freestyle in 1:43.57 and swam with Matt Grunwald, Ben
Gensler and Marshall on the winning 800-yard freestyle relay to give him
four conference titles. Newport added a title in the 100-yard butterfly
in 50.65 seconds, edging Marshall by five-hundreths of a second.
Jennie Roskopf claimed
the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:07.70 and also teamed with Liz Herder,
Lindsay Correll and Kelsey Crunstedt for a win in the 200-yard medley
relay in 1:47.76. The relay time set a meet record and also was an
automatic qualifying time for the NCAA Division III championships.
Meghan Walsh added a win in the 100-yard butterfly in 58.41 seconds,
defeating two-time defending champion Anne Melvin of UW-La Crosse.

Anderson and Eloranta Lead Pointers on First Day

Anderson and Tyler Eloranta each won an individual event and swam on two
winning relays on Thursday as the UW-Stevens Point men�s swimming and
diving team took aim for its sixth straight Wisconsin Intercollegiate
Athletic Conference title after the first day of the three-day event in
Whitewater.
Anderson won the
200-yard individual medley for the third straight year with a time of
1:55.13, while Eloranta gave the Pointers the 50-yard freestyle champion
for the fifth straight season with a winning time of 21.99 seconds,
edging teammate Aaron Marshall by three-hundreths of a second. The pair
joined Marshall and Kyle Hartl for a win in the 200-yard freestyle relay
in 1:24.93 and teamed with Travis Wolf and Garth Newport to take the
400-yard medley relay in 3:26.53.
The Pointer men�s team
has 416 points to hold a commanding lead on second place UW-La Crosse,
which has 299 points. Meanwhile, the UW-La Crosse women look for their
fourth straight title and have 416 points with UW-Stevens Point in
second place with 347 points.
The Pointer women�s
400-yard medley relay squad of Liz Herder, Jennie Roskopf, Meghan Walsh
and Jerica Crook had an NCAA Division III automatic qualifying time by
winning in 3:56.64. Walsh also placed second in the 200-yard individual
medley in 2:12.65.
