Mens
Swimming Looks to Crack Top 10 at NCAA Championships
UW-Stevens Points mens swimming and diving team will rely on depth at
this weekends NCAA Division III Championships in Holland, Michigan, in
hopes of bringing home their first top ten finish since 2001. The
Pointers have qualified eight athletes in nine different individual
events and all four relays.
Junior Alex Anderson has perhaps the best chance to earn a spot on the
medal stand. Anderson is seeded third in the 100-yard freestyle and will
also race in the 200-yard breaststroke and the 50-yard freestyle.
Freshman teammate Ben Genslar will join Anderson in both the 100-yard
freestyle and the 200-yard breaststroke where he is seeded 12th. Genslar
will also swim in the 200-yard individual medley.
Matt Grunwald and Chad Pettis will compete in a pair of indivudual
events. Grunwald is seeded 16th in the 200-yard butterfly and 22nd in
the 100-yard butterfly. Pettis will be on the springboard for both
national championship diving events. Pettis is entered in both the one
and three-meter events.
Garth Newport will see action in the 100-yard butterfly and Tyler
Eloranta will swim the 200-yard freestyle.
The Pointers best hopes for a high finish in the relays rest with the
400-yard medley relay team of Newport, Anderson, Eloranta and Travis
Wolf. That team is ranked ninth heading into the national championships.
The 400-yard freestyle relay team of Anderson, Grunwald, Eloranta and
Aaron Marshall is seeded 10th in the nation.
Division III
dynasty Kenyon College has won the last 25 consecutive national titles,
and is the favorite to win again this year.
