Men Win Fifth
Straight WIAC Swimming and Diving Title; Women Close Second

The UW-Stevens Point men�s swimming and diving
team captured its fifth straight Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic
Conference championship, while the Pointer women�s team finished a close
second for the third straight year at the conference meet Saturday in
Oshkosh.
The men�s team totaled 930 points with UW-La
Crosse second with 898.5 points. It was the closest victory for the men�s
squad in its five-year run. Meanwhile, the women�s team had 923 points to
trail the Eagles by 41.5 points. It was the third straight title for UW-La
Crosse after beating the Pointers by 27 points last year and seven points
in 2001.
The Pointers had two individual champions on
Saturday as Jennie Roskopf won her second title, capturing the 200-yard
breaststroke in 2:26.53 after winning the 100-yard breaststroke on Friday.
Matt Grunwald won the 100-yard butterfly for the second straight year in
1:55.90.
The men�s squad had four runner-up finishers in
Bennet Wencel in the 1,650-yard freestyle in 17:03.62, Aaron Marshall in
the 100-yard freestyle in 47.44 seconds, Alex Anderson in the 200-yard
breaststroke in 2:05.73 and Garth Newport in the 200-yard butterfly in
1:56.38.
The women had two runner-up performers in Alissa
Colbert in the 1,650-yard freestyle in 18:09.22 and Nicole Gant in the
200-yard backstroke in 2:10.60. The Pointer men�s and women�s teams were
also second in the 400-yard freestyle relays with the men posting a time
of 3:08.46 and the women a time of 3:35.88.
