Swimming and
Diving Teams Hold Slim Leads After First Day of WIAC Meet

The UW-Stevens Point men�s and women�s swimming
and diving teams both hold slim leads over UW-La Crosse after the opening
day of the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championships in
Oshkosh.
The Pointer men�s team is seeking its fifth
straight title and has 270 team points with UW-La Crosse second with 254
points. The women�s team has 276 points with UW-La Crosse trailing with
238.5 points.
Both Pointer squads captured the 200-yard
freestyle relay as the men�s team of Alex Anderson, Matt Sievers, Aaron
Marshall and Tyler Eloranta won in 1:24.43. The women�s team of Alissa
Bartz, Jerica Crook, Kelsey Crunstedt and Erica Janssen took advantage of
a disqualification from favored UW-La Crosse to post a winning time of
1:38.78.
Sievers and Anderson both successfully defended
individual titles from last year with Sievers taking the 50-yard freestyle
in 21.41 seconds and Anderson claiming the 200-yard individual medley in
1:56.03. Sam Clausen came through with a runner-up finish in the 500-yard
freestyle in 4:48.42 and Garth Newport was second in the 200-yard
individual medley in 1:58.54.
The Pointer women were aided by six qualifiers
in the finals of the 50-yard freestyle, placing third through eighth. Amy
Bennett posted a second place finish in the 500-yard freestyle at 5:14.00
and Courtney Slagle was second in the 200-yard individual medley in
2:12.30.
The meet continues Friday and Saturday. |
