Eagles Add More Records to Take Women�s Lead, Pointers Hold Men�s Lead

      After setting three women�s meet records on the opening day, UW-La Crosse added four more on Friday to hold the lead after two days at the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference swimming and diving championships in Stevens Point.

     The defending champion Eagles have set conference records in seven of the 12 swimming events so far and hold a slim lead over UW-Stevens Point by scores of 624-601. UW-Stevens Point also leads the men�s competition by 137 points as the Pointers aim for their fourth straight conference title.

     UW-La Crosse sophomore twins Anne and Krista Melvin both won individual titles and set conference records. Krista Melvin won the 200-yard freestyle with a record time of 1:54.73, while Anne Melvin captured the 100-yard butterfly in 58.30 seconds after setting a conference record of 58.21 in the prelims. Sophomore Fallon Toomsen set her second record of the meet, defending her championship and eclipsing her conference record in the 400-yard individual medley in a time of 4:38.24 as the Eagles had the top four finishers in the event. She also set the conference record in the 200-yard individual medley on Thursday.

     Krista Melvin and Toomsen swam on the 800-yard freestyle relay joining Lexi Fink to set a record for the second straight year, posting a time of 7:49.90. Carlene Empanger also swam on the winning relay.

     UW-Stevens Point had one individual champion on the day as freshman Elizabeth Herder captured the 100-yard backstroke with an NCAA Division III automatic qualifying time of 58.99 seconds. The Pointers also had the winning 200-yard medley relay as the team of Alissa Bartz, Jacci Menzel, Lindsey Correll and Jen Randall posted a time of 1:48.61.

     UW-River Falls junior Megan Broskoff edged UW-Stevens Point�s Jennie Roskopf in the 100-yard breaststroke by one-hundreth of a second with a time of 1:08.42, giving the Falcons their first women�s individual champion since Chrissy Quinlan in the same event in 1998.

     UW-Oshkosh freshman Yusuke Iimori set the first men�s conference record of the meet, swimming an automatic qualifying time of 56.70 seconds in the 100-yard breaststroke. UW-La Crosse junior Shane Ryan became the first men�s double winner, winning the 200-yard freestyle in 1:42.75 after claiming the 500-yard freestyle title on Thursday. Ryan also swam on the winning 800-yard freestyle relay with Trevor Rowlands, Josh Mork and Ethan Kaercher in a time of 7:00.06.

     UW-Stevens Point�s Thad Gunther won the 400-yard individual medley in 4:13.36 and finished second in the 100-yard backstroke to teammate Travis Wolf, who won in 53.07 seconds. Gunther also swam on the winning 200-yard medley relay in 1:33.87 with Alex Anderson, Garth Newport and Matt Sievers. Matt Grunwald gave the Pointers a fourth title on the day with a winning time of 51.57 in the 100-yard butterfly.

     UW-Oshkosh swept the diving titles with repeat winners from Thursday. Chris Hansman took the men�s three-meter crown and Rachel Heitkamp captured the women�s one-meter title.
