Pointers Stay Alive in WIAC Tourney
Rebekah Bauer drove in all three of UW-Stevens
Point�s runs as the Pointers remained alive in the Wisconsin
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference softball tournament with a 3-2 win
over UW-Whitewater on Friday in Menomonie.
UW-Stevens Point lost its opening game of the
day to UW-Oshkosh 9-0 and now must win five games on Saturday to capture
the conference tournament. The Pointers will open with UW-Superior in an
elimination game at 9 a.m.
Bauer had a first inning double and then added a
sacrifice fly in the third and another run-scoring double in the fifth to
put the Pointers ahead 3-0. UW-Whitewater rallied with two runs in the
bottom of the fifth and had runners at first and third with one out, but
the Pointers turned a double play. The Warhawks also left a runner at
third base in the sixth.
Ashley Tobalsky earned the victory with a
complete game, allowing six hits and striking out four. Bauer and Laura
Van Abel were both two-for-three as the Pointers had six hits.
In the opener, UW-Oshkosh pitcher Ronessa
Stampfli struck out the first eight batters of the game and finished with
a one-hitter. Van Abel had the Pointers� lone hit with a bunt single in
the fourth inning. The Titans� Lyndsay Allen ended the game by the
eight-run rule with a grand slam in the bottom of the fifth.
