Late Leads Slip
Away in Losses to Yellowjackets
UW-Stevens Point saw two late leads slip away
and dropped close games in both ends of a softball doubleheader on Sunday
at UW-Superior.
The Pointers lost the opening game 4-3 in eight
innings and then fell 12-10 in the second game for their fifth straight
loss. UW-Stevens Point dropped to 18-13-1 overall and 2-8 in the Wisconsin
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.
The Pointers actually saw two late leads fall in
the opening game as they took a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning on a single
by Melissa Boldt and held the lead into the bottom of the seventh when
UW-Superior tied the game on a pinch-hit, run-scoring single by Kacy
Johnston.
UW-Stevens Point went back ahead in the top of
the eighth as Kristin Konieczny and Jenny Feidt each had run-scoring
singles, but the Yellowjackets scored three times in the bottom of the
inning for the win. Erin Kegley drove in the first run with a single and
then scored the winning run on a two-run single by Jamie Lovstad.
Laura Zierler was three-for-four to lead the
Pointers. Hope Krause had five strikeouts and allowed just one earned run
in the defeat.
In the second game, UW-Stevens Point scored five
runs in the fourth inning and carried a 9-7 lead into the sixth inning
when the Yellowjackets scored five runs to escape with another win. Kegley
tied the game with a run-scoring single and then Becky Crane followed with
a three-run homer for a 12-9 lead. Crane also had a two-run homer in the
fifth inning.
The Pointers added a run in the seventh and
scored in each of the last five innings, while pounding out 12 hits. Five
different players had two hits, including Zierler, who hit a solo homer in
the sixth inning.

UW-Oshkosh on Wednesday at 3 p.m. |
