UW-Stevens Point
and Ripon Exchange Close Wins
A pair of tightly-contested games went each
teams way as UW-Stevens Point and Ripon split a softball doubleheader
Friday at McCarty Field.
The Pointers scored in the bottom of the seventh
inning to claim the first game 3-2, while the Red Hawks held off a
UW-Stevens Point rally in the second game to earn a 4-3 victory.
The win was Ripons first over the Pointers in
six all-time meetings and dropped UW-Stevens Point to 16-7-1 overall for
the season. Ripon is now 11-11 overall.
In the opening game, UW-Stevens Point scored the
winning run when Korryn Brooks was hit by a pitch to open the inning.
Jenny Feidt bunted pinch runner Danielle Ashbeck to second and she moved
to third on a single by Mandy Jellish. Jackie Berger then lofted a fly
ball that was caught in shallow right field. Ashbeck was not tagging on
the play, but the throw from right field sailed up the line, allowing her
to score from third.
Jellish, who was three-for-four, opened the game
with a triple and scored on a groundout from Berger before Ripon tied the
game on a two-out double by Mary Friend in the fourth. The Pointers took
the lead in the sixth when Laura Zierler reached on a two-out error and
scored on a double by Kristen Konieczny. However, the Red Hawks tied the
game in the top of the seventh on a run-scoring single by Natalie Geenen.
Ashley Tobalsky earned the complete game victory
for the Pointers.
The second game was marred by seven errors by
the two teams as six of the games seven runs were unearned. In fact,
Ripon also had four errors in the first game as only one of the Pointers
six runs for the day was earned. UW-Stevens Point outhit the Red Hawks
10-4 in the second game, but stranded 10 runners on base, including five
in scoring position.
With the game tied 2-2 in the fifth, Ripons
Sara Rabideaux hit a fly ball that was dropped and then scored on a double
by Geenen. Geenen moved to third on a passed ball and scored on a
groundout by Tara Rabideaux for a 4-2 lead.
UW-Stevens Point plated in a run in the bottom
of the sixth on a two-out single by Laura Van Abel, but the Pointers again
left two runners on base to end the inning. Ripon pitcher Jen Mueller, who
relieved Andrea Knorr in the fourth when she was hit by a hard groundball,
retired the Pointers in order for the first time in the game in the
seventh and picked up the win.
