Pointers Nearly
Post Two Shutouts in Sweep
UW-Stevens Points bid for a pair of shutouts
was spoiled in the seventh inning of the second game, but the Pointers
still rolled to a doubleheader softball sweep of Northland by scores of
6-0 and 8-4 on Monday in Ashland.
The Pointers scored runs in four of the seven
innings of the opening game and then got seven runs in the top of the
seventh inning to blow open a tight second game for the sweep. A shutout
in the second game would have marked only the second time in school
history that the Pointers had three straight shutouts. UW-Stevens Point is
now 14-5-1 overall and has won four straight games entering Wednesdays
doubleheader at UW-Whitewater.
Ashley Tobalsky pitched a three-hit shutout in
the opener with eight strikeouts. The freshman walked seven batters, but
all were stranded as the Lumberjills left 11 runners on base. Rebekah
Bauer drove in three runs for the Pointers with a run-scoring groundout in
the first inning and on singles in the third and sixth innings. Kristen
Konieczny and Mandy Jellish were each three-for-four in the victory.
The second game was scoreless until the fifth
inning when the Pointers scored on a two-out single by Jenni Van Cuyk.
UW-Stevens Point then erupted for seven insurance runs in the top of the
seventh and nearly needed them all when Northland rallied for four runs in
the bottom of the inning. Jackie Berger and Konieczny each had two-run
singles in the seventh for the Pointers, while Northlands Heather
Kinnunen hit a two-out, three-run homer for Northland.
Hope Krause cruised through the first six
innings and earned the win for the Pointers, allowing no earned runs.
Allison Dorn came on to record the final out. |
