UW-Stevens Point achieved its 13th straight
20-win softball season and snapped Edgewoods school-record winning streak
with 6-5 and 7-2 victories on Thursday in Fitchburg.
The Pointers raised their record to 21-14-1
overall for the season and ended the Eagles win streak at 17 straight
games. Edgewood has already clinched the Lake Michigan Conference title
and is now 27-11 overall.
UW-Stevens Point totaled 25 hits in the
doubleheader and jumped out to early leads in both games with two runs in
the top of each first inning. The Pointers have now scored in the first
inning in 21 of their 36 games this year.
Laura Van Abel and Laura Zierler each drove in
runs with groundouts in the opening inning. The Pointers never
relinquished the lead, though Edgewood trimmed the lead to 4-3 after the
fifth and 5-4 after the sixth before scoring in the bottom of the seventh
for the final one-run margin.
Ashley Tobalsky allowed just one earned run over
seven innings and struck out seven while allowing five hits to pick up the
victory. Korryn Brooks had run-scoring doubles in the fourth and sixth
innings to finish two-for-three with two RBIs.
In the second game, Pointers freshman Michelle
Holberg earned her first career win with a complete game effort in her
second career start. Holberg, a Wisconsin Rapids native, had four
strikeouts and scattered six hits, allowing a pair of runs on two-out
singles in the sixth inning.
The Pointers had five singles in the first
inning to take their 2-0 advantage. Laura Van Abel was three-for-four to
lead UW-Stevens Point, scoring runs after each of her hits in the first,
third and fifth innings. Jackie Berger finished three-for-five.
UW-Stevens Point senior and Stevens Point native
Rebekah Bauer did not play due to an academic commitment, snapping a
streak of 133 games started, including the last 116 in left field.
