Pointers Fall Short Against Eighth-Ranked Blugolds

A seventh inning rally against one of the nations top pitchers went for naught as the UW-Stevens Point softball team fell 4-3 in eight innings to eighth-ranked UW-Eau Claire on Saturday in Eau Claire.

The Pointers rallied from a 3-0 deficit in the sixth inning, but the Blugolds scored an unearned run in the eighth inning for the win. UW-Eau Claire also won the second game 6-2 to drop UW-Stevens Point to 18-11-1 overall and 2-6 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

UW-Stevens Point mounted its opening game rally against Blugolds hurler Mallory McKinney, who had allowed only six earned runs all year and entered the game ranked fourth in the NCAA Division III with a 0.41 earned run average. Rebekah Bauer had a run-scoring double in the sixth and Jenni Van Cuyk added a two-run single in the seventh to tie the game as the Pointers had seven hits. However, McKinney reached on an error to open the eighth and then scored on a fielders choice by Amber Haack to win the game. Hope Krause scattered nine hits and allowed two earned runs in taking the loss.

Casey Leisgang led off the bottom of the first inning with a home run for the Blugolds in the second game as UW-Eau Claire built a 4-0 lead after two innings.

UW-Stevens Point outhit the Blugolds 9-7 in the second game with Jenny Feidt finishing three-for-four and Van Cuyk going two-for-four. Ashley Tobalsky took the loss for the Pointers.

UW-Stevens Point plays a doubleheader at UW-Superior on Sunday.
