Pointers Fall
Short Against Eighth-Ranked Blugolds
A seventh inning rally against one of the
nation�s top pitchers went for naught as the UW-Stevens Point softball
team fell 4-3 in eight innings to eighth-ranked UW-Eau Claire on Saturday
in Eau Claire.
The Pointers rallied from a 3-0 deficit in the
sixth inning, but the Blugolds scored an unearned run in the eighth inning
for the win. UW-Eau Claire also won the second game 6-2 to drop UW-Stevens
Point to 18-11-1 overall and 2-6 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic
Conference.
UW-Stevens Point mounted its opening game rally
against Blugolds� hurler Mallory McKinney, who had allowed only six earned
runs all year and entered the game ranked fourth in the NCAA Division III
with a 0.41 earned run average. Rebekah Bauer had a run-scoring double in
the sixth and Jenni Van Cuyk added a two-run single in the seventh to tie
the game as the Pointers had seven hits. However, McKinney reached on an
error to open the eighth and then scored on a fielder�s choice by Amber
Haack to win the game. Hope Krause scattered nine hits and allowed two
earned runs in taking the loss.
Casey Leisgang led off the bottom of the first
inning with a home run for the Blugolds in the second game as UW-Eau
Claire built a 4-0 lead after two innings.
UW-Stevens Point outhit the Blugolds 9-7 in the
second game with Jenny Feidt finishing three-for-four and Van Cuyk going
two-for-four. Ashley Tobalsky took the loss for the Pointers.
UW-Stevens Point plays a doubleheader at
UW-Superior on Sunday. |
