After being held to just three hits in a
1-0 opening game loss, UW-Stevens Point rallied with 15 hits in the
nightcap to split a non-conference softball doubleheader with St. Norbert
on Thursday at Zenoff Park.
The Pointers used three pitchers to throw
the second game shutout and all nine starters had a hit in the victory
that pushed their record to 12-13 overall.
"This was my ideal game," Pointers' coach Kelly Erickson said. "All of our
pitchers threw well and hopefully this will give them some good
confidence."
Stevens Point native Rebekah Bauer
continued her recent torrid hitting by finishing three-for-four in the
second game with two runs scored and an RBI. She has eight hits in 12
at-bats in four games this week.
All five of the Pointers' runs came on two-out hits.
Melissa Boldt drove home two runs with a bases-loaded double in the first
inning and Liz Boettcher added a run-scoring double in the third inning.
Bauer singled home a run in the fourth
inning and Jenny Feidt added a run-scoring single in the fifth.
"It was good to see our bats come around," Erickson said. "We struggled
the past couple games, but came out hitting in the second game."
Alysia Klawitter pitched two innings of
hitless relief to earn the victory and Kelly Schmidt gave up two hits in
two innings of relief.
Starter Amanda Maule pitched the first two innings and re-entered to shut
the Green Knights down in the seventh.
In the opening game, St. Norbert scored its only run in the second inning
when Heather Henri doubled and moved to third with two outs on a groundout
by Pacelli graduate Abby Mallek before scoring on a wild pitch.
UW-Stevens Point had runners on second and third with nobody out in the
fourth after Jackie Berger singled and Bauer doubled, but Green Knights'
pitcher Andrea Leystra posted a strikeout and then forced Jenni Van Cuyk
to fly out. Berger attempted to tag and score, but Henri threw her out at
the plate to end the threat.
Stephanie Anderson scattered eight hits to take the loss, which marked St.
Norbert's first win over the Pointers since April 22, 1994.
UW-Stevens Point will play five games this weekend at the WIAC Cluster in
Platteville. |
