Pointers Gain Home Field for Whitewater Rematch

Box Score

With another matchup looming in three days, UW-Stevens Point secured the home field for its Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference womens soccer quarterfinal against UW-Whitewater with a 5-0 win over the Warhawks on Saturday in Whitewater.

The teams entered the final regular season match likely to face off again in the tournament with Saturdays contest determining the site of the postseason encounter. The Pointers got three goals in the first half and added two more in the second, fighting off cold and windy conditions for their fourth straight win and setting up a rematch with the Warhawks on Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the Pointer Soccer Bowl. UW-Stevens Point is the third seed and UW-Whitewater is seeded sixth.

Despite playing without WIAC scoring leader Amanda Prawat, who missed the match with an injury, the Pointers continued their torrid play and have now outscored their past four opponents by a combined 29-0. The other half of UW-Stevens Points potent offensive tandem, Kaylee Weise, had two goals and two assists on Saturday to match Prawat with 18 goals for the season.

Alison Regal scored the Pointers first two goals, converting the first on a free kick with the wind that carried into the net five minutes into the contest. She added a second goal 20 minutes later off a pass from Weise.

Weise tallied her first goal with four minutes left in the first half off a feed from Anna Van Stippen for a 3-0 lead. Playing into the wind in the second half, the Pointers defense took over from that point, holding the Warhawks to six total shots for the match. UW-Stevens Point posted its fourth straight shutout and held its 11th consecutive opponent to fewer than 10 shots.

The Pointers, now 11-3-2 overall, added two late goals with Liz Kidd scoring off two quick passes from Weise and Tami Endres. Weise scored in the final minute of the match with an assist from Meghan Vanden Heuvel.
