Pointers Prepare For Round Two
With Warhawks
Similar to Major League Soccers two-match
postseason series format, UW-Stevens Point and UW-Whitewater meet
Tuesday in the second of two crucial late-season women's soccer matches over a four-day
period. The match is set for 2 p.m. at the Pointer Soccer Bowl.
The Pointers took the first meeting 5-0 on
Saturday in the regular season finale, finishing 11-3-2 overall and earning the third seed for the
Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference quarterfinal match and the
home field for their second showdown for the Warhawks.
UW-Stevens Point enters the postseason on a
scorching pace, outscoring its opponents 29-0 over the last four
matches. The Pointers boast one of the top offensive tandems in the NCAA
Division III in sophomore forwards Amanda Prawat and Kaylee Weise, who
share the WIAC goal-scoring lead with 18 goals apiece. Weise also has 11 assists for a league-high 47 points, while Prawat has six assists
for 42 points. Prawat did not play in Saturdays contest, but Weise
delivered two goals and two assists and has scored points in each of the
teams 11 wins.
The Pointers have been at their best in the
first half, holding a 35-5 scoring advantage before halftime. UW-Stevens
Points 3.63 goals per game leads the WIAC and the Pointers are
averaging 5.29 goals over their last seven matches. Defensively,
UW-Stevens Point has posted eight shutouts and held 11 straight
opponents to fewer than 10 shots. The Pointers have been outshot in just
one of their 15 matches this season.
UW-Whitewater has been a streaky team, opening
the year 1-4 before posting a six-match unbeaten streak at mid-season.
However, the Warhawks enter the postseason on a four-match losing streak
and are 6-10-1 overall. Mary Donohoo, who played at UW-Stevens Point in
2004, leads the Warhawks with seven goals and one assist for 16 points.
Lindsey Kohlbeck has added three goals and one assist for seven points.
The Pointers have traditionally been at their
best in the WIAC tournament, winning 12 of the leagues 14 tournament
titles while posting a 34-2 all-time record and outscoring teams 141-13.
UW-Stevens Point did not reach the finals for the first time in school
history last year, falling to UW-River Falls 1-0 in double overtime in
the quarterfinals.
The Pointers lead the all-time series with
UW-Whitewater 20-0-2. The teams have played four times in the WIAC
tournament with the most recent encounter being a 3-0 Pointers victory
in the 2001 semifinals. |
