Van Stippen Cashes in For
Pointers to Beat Titans
Box Score
In a match that featured plenty of scoring
opportunities it was UW-Stevens Point that made the most of its chance as
the Pointers pulled out a 1-0 womens soccer victory in the conference
opener on Wednesday at UW-Oshkosh.
Anna Van Stippen scored the only goal of the match in the 24th minute and
the Pointer defense took over from that point, limiting the Titans to just
nine shots. UW-Stevens Point goalkeeper Meredith DeCaluwe thwarted many of
UW-Oshkoshs opportunities with six saves.
DeCaluwe made one of the biggest plays of the
match in the opening minutes when UW-Oshkosh had a breakaway, but DeCaluwe
stuffed the shot near the top of the penalty box.
The Pointers then took advantage of one of their
first scoring chances as Kaylee Weise split two defenders with a through
ball to Van Stippen, who lofted a shot to the near post over Titans
keeper Katie Bera.
Van Stippen also made one of the biggest
defensive plays of the match, clearing a ball from the goal mouth later in
the first half. DeCaluwe was also a big part of the defense, cutting off
several balls near the top of the box to stop long runs by the Titans and
prevent potential breakaways.
The Pointers had several great offensive chances
of their own, missing a close shot in the closing seconds of the first
half and scoring a second half goal that was ruled offsides. UW-Stevens
Point outshot the Titans 14-9 for the match and had five of their seven
first half shots on goal. Bera finished the night with five saves.
The victory came at a price for the Pointers as
midfielder Kimie Wiepz was injured with 16 minutes remaining in the match,
though her status is unknown.
UW-Stevens Point is now 5-1-1 overall and
improved to 14-1-1 in its last 16 meetings with the Titans, avenging a 1-0
home loss last season. The Pointers host UW-Platteville on Sunday at 2
p.m. at the Pointer Soccer Bowl. UW-Oshkosh is now 3-3-1 overall. |
