Pointers Open Season With Win Over Tommies
Box Score
UW-Stevens Point scored the first
three goals of the match and rolled to a 3-1 season-opening victory over
St. Thomas on Friday in St. Paul, Minn.
The Pointers benefited from
an own goal in the 21st minute when they had a throw-in and kicked the
ball toward the net. The St. Thomas goalkeeper misplayed the ball and it
was deflected by a Tommies' player into the net.
The goal stood until 30
minutes remained in the match when freshman Amanda Prawat scored off an
assist from Liz Kidd. UW-Stevens Point added another goal with less than
nine minutes left when sophomore transfer Gwen Blasczyk scored off a pass
from senior defender Tasha Fritsch. The assist marked was Fritsch's first
career point.
St. Thomas added a score
less than two minutes later and outshot the Pointers 15-12 for the match.
However, Meredith DeCaluwe had a strong game in net and finished with six
saves.
It marked the third straight
year the Pointers have defeated the Tommies in the regular season and the
ninth year in a row that they've opened the season with a victory.
UW-Stevens Point will play Sunday at Gustavus Adolphus.
