Penalty Kick Gives Titans Victory Over Pointers
Box Score
A penalty kick with 3:19
left in the match proved to be the difference as UW-Oshkosh came away with
a 1-0 women's soccer victory over UW-Stevens Point on Tuesday at the
Pointer Soccer Bowl.
Neither team was able to
score until UW-Oshkosh had a two-on-one break late in the match. Titans'
forward Nicole Kunick went down near the top of the penalty box,
resulting in the penalty kick that Michelle John converted to the lower
left corner for the victory.
The rematch from last year's
conference tournament title match marked the first time UW-Stevens Point
has ever been shutout at home by a conference opponent in 63 all-time
matches. It was also UW-Oshkosh's first win over the Pointers as a varsity
program as the Titans are now 1-13-1 all-time in the series. UW-Stevens
Point is now 93-3-5 in regular season conference matches in the 14-year
history of the league.
UW-Oshkosh held a 12-11 edge
in shots for the match, though the Titans had just two shots on goal,
including the penalty kick. UW-Stevens Point had a 6-5 advantage at
halftime and the Titans had the first five shots of the second half before
UW-Stevens Point picked up momentum in the final 19 minutes.
Amanda Prawat fired a shot
off the post with 17 minutes left after Kaylee Weise had a shot bounce off
the post for the Pointers in the first half. Prawat also had a solid
scoring chance early in the match that was saved by Titans' goalie
Christine Barutha, who totaled four saves in the shutout win. It was the
first time the Pointers have been shutout in nine matches this season.
UW-Oshkosh took over first
place in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference at 3-0-1 as the
Titans extended their unbeaten streak to six matches and improved to 6-3-1
overall. UW-Stevens Point had its five-match unbeaten streak snapped and
fell to 5-3-1 overall and 2-1-1 in the league.
