Wheaton College came to
town Tuesday as the fourth-ranked Division III women's soccer team in the
country.
The University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point needed about 10 minutes of their
nonconference match to be convinced.
Jennifer Binger and Sarah Richardson each scored a pair of goals as the
Thunder dismantled UWSP 5-0 at the Pointer Soccer Bowl.
Five goals are the most surrendered by a UWSP team since 1992, and the
Thunder became the first visiting team to tally that many goals since
1987.
"We got beat by a better team today," Pointers coach Sheila Miech said.
"Wheaton is a very good team."
UWSP didn't have to wait long to see just how good as the Thunder came out
and stormed the Pointers.
Laura Koontz did all the hard work on the first goal, dribbling past a
defender before sending a laser of a shot on UWSP keeper Kortney Krill,
who got her hands on the ball but couldn't control.
Sara Johnson was in a perfect position to clean up the rebound. Less than
5 minutes later Binger possessed the ball between two
The Pointers (7-3-1) were in a 2-0 hole with 10:12 elapsed in the match.
"They came out hard, and we didn't work very hard early on," said Miech.
"Then you're always trying to play catch-up. We need to work hard to get
better."
The best was yet to come for Wheaton (11-1).
Binger struck again in the 28th minute, scoring a rebound goal after a
blistering shot off the foot of Johnson.
Since dropping their opening match, the Thunder have been steamrollering
the competition, outscoring opponents 54-3 in 11 straight victories.
And with a seemingly endless stream of dangerous players like Binger and
Johnson to choose from, Wheaton has no reason to believe its reign of
terror will end anytime soon.
"We're fielding our best team ever," said Thunder coach Pete Felske.
"We're confident we can do the job to win the game and get off the field.
We can start 15 or 16 players and not lose anything."
One of those, Richardson, came off the bench to account for both of the
Wheaton goals in the second half.
She scored off a nice pass from Hannah Tan and cleaned up some garbage in
the box after the Pointer defense cleared a potential goal off the line
seconds earlier.
UWSP will attempt to bounce back from its first back-to-back losses since
1998 when it visits Macalester (Minn.) College on Friday.
"By getting beat like that it will help us learned what we need to do to
get better," Miech said. "In the second half, I think we showed we could
play with them better."
