Fink Named WIAC Soccer Player of the Year as Four Earn All-Conference
Senior forward Kelly Fink gave UW-Stevens Point its fourth
consecutive Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference womens soccer
Player of the Year award and senior forward Jenny Bruce became the third
player in school history to earn first-team All-Conference all four years
in leading four UW-Stevens Point All-WIAC selections.
Junior defender Tara Schmitt was named to the team for the third
straight year and junior midfielder Megan Frey earned her first
All-Conference award for the Pointers. UW-Stevens Point finished 15-4-3
overall and won its seventh consecutive WIAC tournament championship.
Fink, a West Bend West High School graduate, led the league with 21
goals and shared the conference lead with Bruce with 48 points. A
three-time all-conference selection, Fink ranks fourth in league history
with 67 career goals and 156 career points, despite playing just three
seasons after transferring from Concordia (Wis.). Including statistics
from her freshman season, Fink ranks among the top 15 in NCAA Division III
history with 98 career goals and 235 career points.
Bruce, a Menasha native, joins Charisse Simcakowski and Becky Brem as
the only four-time All-Conference players in school history. She is the
conferences all-time assists leader and ranks in the top 15 in Division
III history with 53 for her career. One of only nine players in Division
III history to score over 50 goals and 50 assists in a career, Bruce led
the league this year with 16 assists and also scored 16 goals to share the
conference lead with 48 points. She ranks third in league history with 161
career points. Bruce was also named the conferences Scholar Athlete award
winner.
Schmitt, a Brookfield native who attended Waukesha Catholic Memorial
High School, was again one of the leaders of a stingy Pointers defense
that allowed just 20 goals in 22 matches and posted a league-high 12
shutouts. Schmitt marked several of the nations top forwards this season
and started all 22 matches.
Frey, a Wauwatosa East High School graduate, totaled four goals and
eight assists for 16 points from her outside midfielder position. She
scored the first goal in the Pointers 3-0 NCAA tournament win over
Macalester and also scored the lone goal in a conference win over
UW-Stout. Frey was one of the teams top two-way players, also providing
solid defense in addition to her offense.
Fink shared Player of the Year honors with UW-River Falls forward
Sarah Carlson. Falcons coach Sean McKuras was named the leagues Coach of
the Year for the second straight season. |
