UW-Stevens Point Snaps Nation's Longest Home Win Streak at Trinity

SAN ANTONIO The longest home winning streak in all divisions of NCAA womens soccer came to an end Sunday night when the UW-Stevens Point womens soccer team pulled out an intense 1-0 victory at Trinity University.

The Tigers had won 31 straight at home, which was tied for the second-longest streak in Division III history and eighth-longest in all NCAA divisions history. However, UW-Stevens Points Kelly Fink scored in the 29th minute and freshman Kortney Krill posted her second straight shutout as the Pointers picked up their first win over the Tigers since the 1993 Division III tournament in five all-time meetings.

UW-Stevens Point is now 2-0 overall and ranked eighth in Division III. Trinity is ranked 15th in the nation and falls to 1-1.

Fink took a pass from Melissa Becker down the left side of the field and split two defenders before lofting a ball from 15 yards into the back of the net.

The Pointers outshot the Tigers 4-3 in the first half, but played defensive in the second half, allowing Trinity a 10-4 advantage in the second 45 minutes and a 13-8 advantage for the match. The Tigers had six corner kick opportunities, including five in the second half, but were unable to get a ball past Krill, who had three saves as the Pointers opened the season with two straight shutouts for the fourth time in school history.

Much of the second half was played in Trinitys end of the field, however, UW-Stevens Point still had occasional scoring opportunities, including a shot by Molly Cady that rang off the crossbar in the final 15 minutes.

The Pointers return home on Monday and will take on Gustavus Adolphus in their home opener Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Pointer Soccer Bowl.
