Blank Southwestern in Sixth Straight Season Opening Win
GEORGETOWN, Texas Kortney Krill posted a shutout in her first
collegiate match as the UW-Stevens Point womens soccer team opened the
season with 3-0 win over Southwestern University on Friday.
Krill, a freshman from Wauwatosa West High School, made four saves
all in the second half and Kelly Fink provided the offense with
two goals as the Pointers opened the season with a win for the sixth
straight year.
Fink scored the only goal of the first half 17 minutes into the
match when Andrea Oswalds corner kick was deflected by Molly Cady
across the front of the goal to Fink, who scored her first of the season
after tallying 22 goals last season. Fink added a second goal in the 66th
minute when she won a ball away from Pirates goalie Tara Brace at the
top of the penalty box and drilled a shot for a 2-0 lead.
Emma-klara Porter finished the scoring with eight minutes left with
a shot from the top of the box that lofted over Brace for a 3-0 lead.
Andrea Spiel assisted on the goal.
The Pointers outshot Southwestern 21-10, giving the Pirates few
quality chances as freshman Tasha Fritsch filled in at sweeper for injured
senior Macy Mory and sophomore Melissa Becker played her first-ever match
at defensive stopper.
UW-Stevens Point is ranked eighth in the NCAA Division III rankings
and will play 15th-ranked Trinity (Texas) Sunday at 7:30 p.m. in San
Antonio.
