Pointers Tie Gustavus Adolphus to Snap
Home Winning Streak
Despite playing
nearly the entire second half and both periods of overtime down one
player, the UW-Stevens Point womens soccer team rallied for a 2-2 tie
Saturday against Gustavus Adolphus at the Pointer Soccer Bowl.
Kelly Fink scored with
16:47 left in the second half and the teams played 20 minutes of scoreless
overtime for a tie that snapped UW-Stevens Points 18-match home winning
streak, which was the third-longest streak in the NCAA Division III.
The last time the Pointers
(2-0-1) didnt win at home was a 1-0 loss to Chicago on Sept. 26, 2000,
and like that match when the Pointers had 18 corner kicks but didnt
score, UW-Stevens Point had 17 corner kick opportunities in Saturdays
match.
The Pointers did cash in
on one corner kick opportunity when Andrea Oswald scored of an assist by
Jenny Bruce three minutes into the second half after trailing 1-0 at
halftime. However, less than three minutes later, Pointers midfielder
Andrea Spiel received a red card and was forced to miss the final 59
minutes of the match.
Gustavus Adolphus (2-0-1)
took advantage with 25 minutes left in the second half when Birabwa Mutebi
scored her second goal of the match, but the Pointers rallied to tie the
game on Finks breakaway goal. The tie was the Pointers first since a
1-1 deadlock with Trinity (Tex.) on Sept. 6, 1998.
UW-Stevens Point held a
20-10 advantage in shots, including a 12-4 edge in the first half. The Pointers
will host UW-Whitewater Tuesday at 4 p.m. when they aim for their NCAA
record-setting 56th straight win over a conference opponent.
