Pointers Become School's First Undefeated Team Since 1969

For the first time ever, the UW-Stevens Point womens soccer team finished the regular season unbeaten after posting a 3-0 win over Edgewood Tuesday night in Madison.

With its 14-0-2 record, the team is the seventh undefeated squad in UW-Stevens Point history and the first since the 1969 womens field hockey team posted a 9-0-4 record. The other undefeated teams that played at least seven games were the football team in 1958, 1955 and 1953, and the mens basketball team in 1936 and 1933.

Molly Cady started the scoring 14 minutes into the match when Andrea Spiel sent a cross to the far post that Cady headed in for a 1-0 lead. The one-goal margin stood until halftime, despite the Pointers holding a 16-1 advantage in shots over the Eagles (5-13).

UW-Stevens Point added another goal just 49 seconds into the second half when Andrea Oswald took the ball off a short corner and sent a pass into the box that skipped off Emma-klara Porters head and was headed in by Kelly Fink. The goal was Finks sixth straight game with a score and her 20th of the season, marking the fifth time a Pointer player has scored 20 goals in a season. Fink also scored 22 goals last year and Marie Muhvic had 20 goals or more the previous three seasons.

Just over seven minutes later, the Pointers made it 3-0 when Spiel sent a cross into the box directly to the foot of Porter, who drilled a shot into the back of the net.

The Pointers held a 27-1 advantage in shots for the match and a 13-1 margin in corner kicks while improving to 37-1-2 over their last 40 regular season contests.

UW-Stevens Point opens postseason play on Tuesday, Nov. 5 when it hosts UW-Platteville for the sixth straight year in the WIAC quarterfinals at 3 p.m.
