UW-Stevens
Point Captures Sixth Straight WIAC Tournament Crown
Behind three first
half goals, UW-Stevens Point won its 10th Wisconsin Intercollegiate
Athletic Conference womens soccer tournament in 11 seasons and ran its
unbeaten streak to a school record 19 straight matches with a 4-2 victory
over UW-Eau Claire Saturday in Stevens Point.
The Pointers have
beaten UW-Eau Claire in eight of the 10 championship victories and have
ended the Blugolds season 10 of the past 11 years. UW-Stevens Point is
now 17-0-2 overall and earns an automatic berth to the NCAA Division III
tournament for the sixth straight year. The Pointers will learn of their
first round opponent on Sunday night.
Molly Cady started
the scoring for the Pointers with a penalty kick just 2:35 into the match
as Kelly Fink was taken down by Blugolds goalkeeper Megan Brady on a
breakaway. At the 10:59 mark of the first half, UW-Stevens Point scored
another goal when Pointers goalkeeper Kortney Krill launched a long
punt over the Blugolds defense that Jenny Bruce raced down and made a
move around Brady for a 2-0 lead.
UW-Eau Claires
Kiley Zellner cut the lead to 2-1 at the 27:46 mark when she took a pass
from Marcia Foltz off a free kick and slid it past Krill. However, the
Pointers countered with just 2:29 left in the half as Megan Frey took a
corner kick that Cady headed in for a 3-1 lead.
UW-Stevens Point
extended the lead to 4-1 just 10 minutes into the second half as Kelly
Fink sent a throw in that Cady headed to Andy Oswald for a goal. UW-Eau
Claire finished the scoring with 14:50 left on a goal by Maleia Damato
from Kris Unterweger.
Brady finished with
nine saves for the Blugolds and Melissa Meister had six second half stops
for UW-Stevens Point.
The Pointers scored a WIAC tournament record
17 goals in the three tournament games and the four goals Saturday marked
the most theyve ever scored in a championship match. UW-Stevens Point
extended its NCAA record conference winning streak to 66 straight matches,
but allowed two goals for just the second time in the streak, having also
done so in the very first game of the streak a 3-2 win
over UW-River Falls in 1996.
