UW-Stevens Point 3, University of Chicago 1

UW-Stevens Point scored off three corner kicks to rally from a one-goal deficit for a 3-1 victory over the University of Chicago in non-conference womens soccer Thursday in Stevens Point.

After the Maroons Renee Neuner scored on a breakaway goal just three minutes into the second half, the Pointers tied the match less than two minutes later when Andrea Spiels corner kick was headed in the goal by a Chicago defender for an own goal.

Just seven minutes later the Pointers broke the tie on another corner kick by Spiel as Molly Cady headed in the cross for a 2-1 lead. UW-Stevens Point finished the scoring at the 76:50 mark when Jenny Bruces corner kick was played out to defender Katie OLeary, who sent a ball into the box that deflected off Cadys foot to Kelly Fink for a 3-1 lead.

The Pointers held a deceiving 21-6 margin in shot attempts as Chicago had a number of second half possessions and worked several balls into the penalty box, but came away with just three shot attempts for the half. Kortney Krill had two impressive first half saves to earn the victory in goal for the Pointers.

The win extended UW-Stevens Points home field unbeaten streak to 21 straight matches over the team that last beat the Pointers at home with a 1-0 win on Sept. 26, 2000. Oddly, the Pointers failed to score on 18 corner kick opportunities in that match, but tallied three times on 13 corner kicks on Thursday. UW-Stevens Point is now 40-3-1 in the 44 matches since that most recent meeting with the Maroons.

The Pointers host UW-Oshkosh in a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match on Tue., Sept. 24 at 4 p.m. at the Pointer Soccer Bowl.
