Fink Scores School-Record Four Goals as Pointers Top Carleton

NORTHFIELD, Minn. Kelly Fink scored a school-record four goals to provide all the offense for the UW-Stevens Point womens soccer team as the Pointers extended their unbeaten streak to 13 straight matches with a 4-0 win Friday at Carleton.

Fink scored two goals in each half to give her 16 for the season as the Pointers, ranked third in the NCAA Division III, improved to 11-0-2 overall.

Fink started the scoring 10:56 into the match when Tara Schmitt lofted a pass over the defense that Fink tipped toward the goal, but a Carleton defender kept out of the net. Fink followed the shot and drove home the rebound for the early lead.

She added another goal with 20 seconds left in the half when she sprinted past the Knights defense and drilled a shot to the far post for a 2-0 halftime lead.

UW-Stevens Point made it 3-0 when Jenny Bruce sent a cross into the box, drawing Knights goalie Cara Jones off her line. Fink corralled the pass and found the empty net at the 57:11 mark.

Kim Reese delivered a perfect header to Fink for her fourth goal with 4:17 left in the match. It marks the first time a player has ever scored all four of the Pointers goals in a single match.

The Pointer defense posted its eighth shutout of the season and never allowed Carleton a quality scoring chance in the first meeting between the schools since 1992. UW-Stevens Point outshot the Knights 19-7, including a 13-4 margin in the first half.

UW-Stevens Point plays again Saturday at 1 p.m. at UW-River Falls and can clinch its sixth straight Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference title with a win or tie.
