Pointers Defeat St. Thomas in Season
Opener
The UW-Stevens Point womens soccer team lived up to expectations
in its season opener Friday by beating St. Thomas 3-1 in St. Paul, Minn.
Kelly Fink scored a first half goal for the Pointers, who are
ranked fourth in the NCAA Division III preseason poll. Jenny Bruce added
an early second half goal for a 2-0 UW-Stevens Point lead. After a St.
Thomas score with 36 minutes left, the Pointers finished the scoring on a
goal by Molly Cady with 25 minutes left.
There were some rough spots, but it was a good performance for
the first game of the season, said Pointers coach Sheila Miech, who
improved her career record to 199-71-16 with the victory. Any time you
can pick up a win against a quality team in the first game of the season,
its a great start.
St. Thomas held possession for much of the first 10 minutes, but
the Pointers took over and had several chances to score before Fink
finally broke through off a great pass from Bruce with 10 minutes left in
the first half.
The Pointers also controlled much of the second half, misfiring on
several quality chances. Bruce scored 10 minutes into the second half on a
long lead pass from midfielder Tara Schmitt, while Cadys goal came off
a corner kick by Andrea Oswald.
The Pointers take on Gustavus Adolphus Sunday at 1 p.m. in St.
Peter, Minn.
