Pointers
Control Second Half to Sprint Past St. Norbert
A dominant second half keyed the UW-Stevens Point womens soccer
team past St. Norbert 6-0 in a non-conference match Thursday at the
Pointer Soccer Bowl.
UW-Stevens Point led just 1-0 at the half, but
exploded for five second half tallies in the victory. The Pointers outshot
the Green Knights 41-1, including a 22-0 margin in the second half, to
improve to 13-1 overall.
Molly Cady scored two goals, including the only first half goal on
a penalty kick after a Green Knights defender had a handball on Andrea
Oswalds shot on goal. Cady added a second half goal when she fired a
shot from 20 yards that rolled into the bottom left corner of the goal.
Megan Frey gave the Pointers a 3-0 lead when she rebounded a shot
from Oswald at the 57:29 mark. Kelly Fink scored her 18th goal of the
season on a rebound header at the 72:33 mark after Renee DeBrouxs shot
bounced of the crossbar.
The Pointers added two goals in a 1:32 span late in the match when
Alyssa Souza sent a ball in front that Kim Reese headed to Emma Porter for
a goal. DeBroux added an unassisted goal when she collected a loose ball
25 yards out and drilled it past St. Norbert goalie Pam Mathes.
Mathes made 15 saves for the Green Knights, who had only allowed 12
goals all season entering the match and fell to 8-5-1 overall.
UW-Stevens Point is ranked 10th in the NCAA Division III rankings
and completes its regular
season Sunday at 3 p.m. against 21st ranked Macalester at the Pointer
Soccer Bowl.
