Defensive Effort Leads Pointers Past Macalester

The UW-Stevens Point womens soccer team completed its regular season with its best record in school history by posting a 2-0 win over Macalester Sunday at the Pointer Soccer Bowl.

Picture (153x202, 17.6Kb)The Pointers used a strong defensive effort to earn the win, holding Macalester to just five shots on goal in the victory. The win marked UW-Stevens Points ninth shutout in its last 11 matches.

UW-Stevens Point improved to 14-1 and is ranked 10th in the NCAA Division III rankings. Macalester, which is ranked 21st in the country, had its seven-match winning streak snapped and fell to 12-3. The Scots were in the Division III championship match two of the past three seasons.

Kelly Fink scored her 19th goal of the season and 50th goal of her two-year career just 6:57 into the match. Fink, who scored 31 goals last season at Concordia (Wis.), rebounded a shot from Molly Cady that bounced off the crossbar and onto Finks foot.

The Pointers took a 2-0 lead in the second half with 24:10 left when Rochelle Menard took a free kick 30 yards away and Cady headed it in for her 11th goal of the season.

UW-Stevens Point held a 13-5 advantage in shots and Macalester goalie Lisa Bauer made six saves for the Scots. Pointers goalie Brianna Hyslop made one save for the shutout.

The Pointers have now won 15 straight home matches and 33 of their last 35 at the Pointer Soccer Bowl. UW-Stevens Point will have home field for the entire WIAC tournament next week, beginning Tuesday at 3 p.m. against UW-Platteville.
