Miech Wins 200th as Pointers Defeat
Gustavus Adolphus
St. Peter, Minn. - Sheila Miech became the fifth coach in NCAA
Division III womens soccer history to reach 200 career victories and
UW-Stevens Point improved to 2-0 for the season with a 2-1 victory Sunday
at Gustavus Adolphus College.
Miech, who is now 200-71-16 in her 15th season with the
Pointers is just the second female coach to reach the milestone, joining
Aliceann Wilber of William Smith (N.Y.), who has 207 wins. The only other
Division III coaches to reach the mark are Dan Blank of St. Marys
(Minn.), Joe Bochicchio of Scranton (Pa.) and Joe Russo of College of New
Jersey.
Its a great honor to reach 200 wins, but that really wasnt
the most important statistic for me today, Miech said. This was an
important game for our team and to start the season with two wins against
Minnesota teams is a great accomplishment.
The Pointers also beat St. Thomas on Friday and have now beaten
Gustavus Adolphus four straight times. UW-Stevens Point has now won 18 of
its last 19 games dating to last season.
Miech is the only coach in UW-Stevens Point history, so the win
also marked the 200th win in the history of the schools
program, which has won eight Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference
titles and made seven NCAA tournament appearances.
Two hundred wins is really hard to imagine, Miech said. I
honestly think I can remember them all.
The Pointers gave Miech a game to remember on Sunday as Kelly Fink
sprinted past the Gusties defense off a lead pass from Molly Cady to
give UW-Stevens Point a 1-0 lead just 7:51 into the match.
UW-Stevens Point held possession of the ball for most of the first
half and held Gustavus Adolphus without a shot for the first 26 minutes of
the game, however, the Pointers were unable to add to their lead.
The Pointers made it 2-0 at the 6:03 mark of the second half when
Fink collided with Gusties goalie Linnea Carlson, who was retrieving a
free kick by Jenny Bruce. The ball squirted away and Mickey Jacob fired a
shot into the empty goal.
Gustavus Adolphus rallied four minutes later when Lindsay Parker
sent a cross in front of the net that Michelle Kurtz put in to cut the
lead to 2-1.
Brianna Hyslop made seven saves as the Pointers held off the
Gusties, who had a significant wind advantage in the second half. The
Pointers outshot the Gusties 25-10, including 15-3 in the first half.
UW-Stevens Point will continue its games against Minnesota
opponents by hosting St. Benedict Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Pointer Soccer
Bowl.
