Jacob Delivers UW-Stevens Point Another WIAC Tournament Championship

Box Score

Mickey Jacob was the hero of the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference womens soccer championship match for the third straight year, scoring the lone goal in UW-Stevens Points 1-0 victory over UW-Eau Claire Saturday at the Pointer Soccer Bowl in Stevens Point.

Jacob headed in a corner kick by Jenny Bruce at the 23:24 mark of the first half for the only goal of the match. She also scored the game-winner in the first half of the Pointers 2-0 title match win over UW-Eau Claire last year and set up the winning goal with an assist in a 1-0 overtime victory against UW-La Crosse in 1999. The goal was Jacobs fourth of the season and first since Sept. 29. Bruce, who celebrated her 21st birthday Saturday, tied a WIAC tournament record with five assists in the playoffs

The title was UW-Stevens Points fifth straight and ninth in 10 years. UW-Stevens Point also clinched its fifth straight NCAA Division III tournament berth and eighth in nine years. Seven of the nine WIAC tournament titles have come over UW-Eau Claire, which has now lost 12 straight to the Pointers.

The victory also tied the NCAA all-divisions conference winning streak as the Pointers won their 55th consecutive WIAC match. UW-Stevens Point tied the record held by North Carolina from 1994 to 2000. The Pointers are now 27-1 in WIAC tournament matches, having outscored opponents 115-8 in the history of the tournament.

For the season, UW-Stevens Point is now 17-1 overall and ranked ninth in the NCAA Division III rankings. UW-Stevens Point has now won 18 straight home matches and eight straight overall, outscoring opponents 32-1 over the span.

UW-Stevens Point outshot UW-Eau Claire 23-9, including an 8-1 margin in the second half. Pointers goalie Brianna Hyslop made six saves all in the first half.
