Pointers Drop Heartbreaker to Third-Ranked Wheaton

Wheaton College scored three goals in a 10-minute span late in the second half to fend off the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point women's soccer team in non-conference action Tuesday at the Pointer Soccer Bowl.

The Pointers led Wheaton, which is ranked third in the latest NCAA Division III rankings, by a 2-0 score before the Crusaders started their rally in the final 21 minutes of the match. The loss snapped UW-Stevens Point's 18-match home win streak. Wheaton was also the last team to win in Stevens Point, posting a 1-0 win in 1998.

Marie Muhvic scored a first half goal off a cross by Jenny Bruce just 14:46 into the match and Andrea Spiel added a goal with an assist from Molly Cady 10 minutes later for a 2-0 Pointer lead, which stood for most of the match.

Wheaton scored its first goal when Elizabeth Mahon got free in front of the net and scored past Brianna Hyslop with 21:01 left. Rebecca Mouw scored six minutes later to tie the match with 15:35 left.

The Crusaders scored the game-winning goal when Mouw broke free down the left sideline, entered the penalty box and was taken down for a penalty kick. She converted the goal with 11:44 left to give Wheaton the comeback win.

The Crusaders, who are now 5-0 overall, outshot the Pointers 22-14. UW-Stevens Point, which is ranked 25th in Division III, fell to 5-3 overall with all three losses coming to teams in the top eight of the national rankings. Macalester (Minn.) is ranked eighth and Trinity (Texas) is ranked seventh.
