Second Half Goals Lift Pointers Past
UW-Oshkosh
A pair of second half goals just five minutes apart was all the
offense the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point women's soccer team
needed in a 2-0 victory over UW-Oshkosh Wednesday at the Pointer Soccer
Bowl.
UW-Oshkosh was the only remaining undefeated team in the Wisconsin
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and fell to 3-1 overall and 1-1 in the
WIAC. The Pointers, ranked 16th in the NCAA Division III
rankings, are now 5-1 overall and 2-0 in the WIAC.
After a scoreless first half that snapped the Pointers' string of
seven consecutive halves with a goal, UW-Stevens Point broke the stalemate
when Jenny Schmit sent a long cross from the corner that Jenny Bruce
knocked in for a 1-0 lead.
Just five minutes later, the Pointers added another goal when Marie
Muhvic scored in her third straight match. Muhvic had her back to the goal
from 25 yards out, turned and fired a shot that sailed over Titans'
goalkeeper Jackie Coville's head.
UW-Stevens Point outshot the Titans 18-6 in a physical match that
featured 23 fouls, including 16 by UW-Oshkosh.
The Pointers have a pair of matches against top 10 opponents in the
next week. UW-Stevens Point will play at ninth-ranked Macalester (Minn.)
Saturday and will host third-ranked Wheaton (Ill.) on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
