Chicago "Corners" Pointers in 1-0 Victory

Despite outshooting the University of Chicago 19-5 and having 18 corner kick opportunities, the UW-Stevens Point women's soccer team fell short in a 1-0 non-conference loss to the Maroons Tuesday at the Pointer Soccer Bowl.

Chicago scored at the 16:11 mark of the first half when Clara Schroedl sent a long free kick that sailed over the head of the Pointer defense. Maroons' forward Cherish Orozco raced past the defense to poke the ball past Pointer goalie Brianna Hyslop for the match's only score.

Chicago packed in its defense thereafter and attempted only three shots the rest of the match. The Maroons handed the Pointers two of their four losses last year, including a defeat in the NCAA Division III tournament first round. UW-Stevens Point entered today's match ranked 24th in Division III.

The Pointers had two of their best opportunities in the final minute as Andrea Oswald sent a long pass in front that Mickey Jacob headed toward the goal, but Chicago defender Loni Jenkins stepped in front of the goal to knock it aside. Marie Muhvic later sent a long shot that Maroons' goalie Anne Aydinian punched over the goal with 30 seconds left for the Pointers' 18th and final corner kick of the match.

Chicago had a goal disallowed at the 27:22 mark when the ball was ruled to have entered the goal off of a hand.

UW-Stevens Point fell to 6-4 overall and will host UW-Stout in a WIAC match Thursday at 4 p.m.
