UW-Stevens Point claimed its first WIAC tournament title and NCAA Division III tournament berth since 2002 by capturing the conference tournament in dramatic fashion with a 6-5 win over UW-Whitewater in the title game in Wisconsin Rapids.

The teams may face each other again this weekend as the Pointers earned the top seed for the NCAA regional, which will be played in Whitewater. UW-Stevens Point will meet fourth seed St. Scholastica on Thursday at 2:30, while second-seeded UW-Whitewater plays third-seeded St. Thomas.

Meeting each other for the seventh time in nine days, the Pointers beat the top-ranked Warhawks in the title game on the strength of a two-run homer by Tim Schlosser (Oconomowoc, WI) in the top of the ninth inning for a 6-4 lead. Matt Polomis (Wausaukee, WI) homered in the eighth to tie the game and Matt Mehne (Amherst, WI) pitched the final three innings for the win.

In the opening round, the Pointers beat UW-Oshkosh 6-4 behind a complete game effort from J.C. Reinke (Bonduel, WI) and a two-run single by Polomis to break a 4-4 tie in the bottom of the eighth. UW-Stevens Point then defeated UW-Whitewater 15-4, getting home runs by five different players and a solid pitching effort from Polomis. Jake Frombach (Stratford, WI) was four-for-five and Ryan Jones (Eau Claire, WI) drove in five runs.

UW-Stevens Point lost 4-3 to UW-Whitewater in the championship round as Steve Wiczek (Stevens Point, WI) drove in two runs, but the Pointers left the bases loaded in the eighth and ninth innings to spoil a strong six-inning pitching performance from Jordan Zimmermann (Auburndale, WI).

The winner of this weekends regional tournament earns a spot in the Division III World Series May 27-31 at Fox Cities Stadium in Appleton.
