NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP
MEN�S BASKETBALL RALLY SET
A rally celebrating
UW-Stevens Point�s second consecutive NCAA Division III men�s
basketball championship will be held on Wed., March 30 at 6 p.m. in
the Quandt Fieldhouse. Please join us in congratulating the
back-to-back national champion Pointers.

UW-Stevens Point had a
strong start to the season with a 6-1 record last week in Port
Charlotte, Fla. and is scheduled to play six home games this week,
weather permitting.
After sweeping
Concordia-Moorhead 8-7 and 8-5 last Sunday, the Pointers split with
St. Olaf, losing 12-8 and winning 21-5. They beat St. John�s 13-7
before sweeping 20th-ranked Carthage 11-6 and 6-4.
The Pointers had a
tremendous offensive week, hitting .383 over the seven games with 12
home runs as every regular player hitting at least .300. Steve
Wiczek (Plover, WI) led the attack by hitting .536 with three home
runs and seven RBI�s. Chuck Brehm (Spencer, WI) hit .458 and Jake
Frombach (Stratford, WI) hit .407. Ryan Jones (Eau Claire, WI) hit
.385 with four home runs and 11 RBI�s.
Kevin Pankow
(Oconomowoc, WI) made four relief appearances and had a win and two
saves to lead the pitching staff.

The Pointers totaled a 6-4 record over their spring break trip in
Kissimmee, Fla., but it was hardly a break as they played seven
games over the final two days.
After winning its opening two games and losing to Fontbonne (Mo.)
2-0, the Pointers rallied with three straight wins. They beat Mount
Vernon Nazarene (Ohio) 2-0, Augsburg 7-0 and Eastern Connecticut
State 2-1. On Friday, the Pointers lost to Western Connecticut State
3-2 and then beat Concordia-Moorhead 4-0 before losing to Ramapo
(N.J.) 5-2 and Allegheny (Pa.) 5-2.
UW-Stevens Point had an outstanding pitching week with a combined
0.31 team earned run average as it allowed only three earned runs
for the week. Katie Knoedler (Mosinee, WI) threw 10 scoreless
innings, while Kelly Jablonski (Plover, WI) allowed one earned run
in 27 innings and Stephanie Anderson (Milwaukee, WI) gave up just
two earned runs in 27 innings.
Rebekah Bauer (Stevens Point, WI) hit .333 with four doubles to lead
the Pointers. Anderson hit .308 for the week and Melissa Boldt (New
Berlin, WI) hit .300.
The Pointers are scheduled to open their home season on Saturday
against Edgewood, weather permitting.
TRACK AND FIELD

UW-Stevens Point had four individual champions as the men's team
placed second of 15 teams to open the outdoor season on Saturday at
the Emory Invitational in Atlanta.
The Pointer women's
team had three champions and was fifth of 12 teams. Cumberland
(Tenn.) won the men's meet and host Emory took the women's title.
Mitch Ellis (Three
Lakes, WI) had an NCAA provisional mark in winning the men's high
jump at six feet, eight inches. Also, Mark LaLonde (Park Falls, WI)
captured the 5000-meter run in 15:09.75, while Andrew Schliepp (Redgranite,
WI) won the 110-meter high hurdles in 15.14 seconds and Paul
Schliepp (Redgranite, WI) claimed the 400-meter hurdles in 55.46
seconds. Matt Legel (Crystal Lake, IL) had an NCAA provisional time
while falling one-hundreth of a second short of the title in the
800-meter run in 1:53.39.
Beth Richter (Green
Bay, WI) won the triple jump in 34 feet, 5.75 inches and placed
second in the long jump at 16 feet, 8.5 inches to lead the women's
team. Ashleigh Potuznik (Baraboo, WI) won the 3000-meter
steeplechase in 11:31.84 and Veronique Van Gheem (Green Bay, WI)
took the 10,000-meter run in 39:34.29.
