NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP MEN�S BASKETBALL RALLY SET

    A rally celebrating UW-Stevens Point�s second consecutive NCAA Division III men�s basketball championship will be held on Wed., March 30 at 6 p.m. in the Quandt Fieldhouse. The university is on spring break this week and the event will be conducted after the students return to campus. Please join us in congratulating the back-to-back national champion Pointers.

    UW-Stevens Point capped off its season in impressive fashion with a pair of convincing victories at the NCAA Division III final four in Salem, Va. to become the third school to win back-to-back national championships.

     The Pointers extended a three-point halftime lead into the largest margin of victory in championship game history on Saturday with a 73-49 win over Rochester (N.Y.). They rolled past York (Pa.) 81-58 in Friday�s semifinals to reach the title game. UW-Stevens Point matched last season�s school record for victories by compiling a 29-3 record, including a 103-18 record over the past four seasons. The championship game win was the 200th career victory for head coach Jack Bennett in nine seasons.

     Jason Kalsow (Huntley, IL) totaled 15 points in the title game to earn tournament Most Outstanding Player honors. He had an outstanding all-around performance in the semifinals with 20 points, 12 rebounds, eight assists and five blocks. Jon Krull (Marshall, WI) also earned all-tournament honors after posting season-highs 22 points and seven rebounds in the championship game.

     Nick Bennett (Stevens Point, WI) scored all 18 of his title game points in the second half to earn a spot on the all-tournament team. Bennett also had 16 points in the semifinals and ended his career three points behind second place Tim Naegeli on the school�s all-time scoring list. Eric Maus (Green Bay, WI) had 12 points and 12 rebounds against York and held Rochester All-American Seth Hauben to seven points in the final.

     UW-Stevens Point won its five NCAA tournament games this year by an average of 21.0 points per game. The Pointers also have won 11 straight national tournament games and are now 16-3 all-time in the NCAA tournament.

   UW-Stevens Point opened the season with a doubleheader sweep of Concordia-Moorhead by scores of 8-7 and 8-5 on Sunday in Port Charlotte, Fla. The Pointers have six more games coming up in Florida over the next four days.

   Steve Wiczek (Stevens Point, WI) homered in each game and drove in the winning run in the opener. Wiczek went two-for-four in the first game and had the game-winning single to drive in two runs in the bottom of the seventh and final inning.

   Wiczek and Ryan Jones (Eau Claire, WI) connected for back-to-back home runs in the fifth inning of the second game and Plover native Adam Evanoff (Plover, WI) also homered later in the inning as the Pointers completed the sweep. Kevin Pankow (Oconomowoc, WI) picked up the win in the opening game and a save in the second game in relief of winning pitcher Shane Standifer (Princeton, WI).

    The Pointers opened their season with two victories in Kissimmee, Fla. on Sunday, beating Washington and Jefferson (Pa.) 5-2 and Westminster (Pa.) 2-0. UW-Stevens Point plays eight more games over the next five days on its spring break trip.

    Kelly Jablonski (Plover, WI) opened her collegiate career on a strong note, taking a no-hitter into the fifth inning and ending up with a two-hit shutout in the win over Westminster. Jablonski had five strikeouts and walked none in the victory. Jenny Feidt (Kimberly, WI) had a two-out run-scoring double in the fourth inning and Mandy Jellish (Kaukauna, WI) scored on a two-out error in the fifth for the Pointers.

    Earlier in the day, the Pointers were no-hit until the fifth inning and rallied from a two-run deficit for the win over Washingon and Jefferson. Stephanie Anderson (Milwaukee, WI) struck out 11 and allowed three hits in the complete game win. Rebekah Bauer (Stevens Point, WI) opened a three-run sixth inning with a single and scored the go-ahead run on an error for the Pointers.

    Alex Anderson (La Crosse, WI) was an All-American in three individual events and swam on four of the Pointers five honorable mention All-American relays as the UW-Stevens Point men�s swimming and diving team placed 12th at the NCAA Division III championships over the weekend in Holland, Mich.

    Anderson was third in the 100-yard breaststroke in 56.61 seconds, seventh in the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:05.12 and eighth in the 50-yard freestyle in 21.27 seconds.

    He joined Travis Wolf (Rochester, MN), Garth Newport (Berlin, WI) and Aaron Marshall (Cambridge, MN) for a ninth place finish in the 200-yard medley relay in 1:33.76. The 200-yard freestyle relay was 12th in 1:25.30, while the 400-yard freestyle relay was 13th in 3:08.91 and the 400-yard medley relay was 13th in 3:29.65. The 800-yard freestyle relay was 16th in 7:05.42. Marshall and Tyler Eloranta (Pewaukee, WI) were also members of four relays, while Newport swam on three relay teams. Wolf and Matt Grunwald (Madison, WI) were members of two relays and Ben Gensler (Naperville, IL) swam on the 800-yard freestyle relay.

   Kenyon (Ohio) dominated the meet to extend its NCAA record for consecutive titles in any sport to 26 straight.

   The Pointers open the outdoor season this week when they travel to Atlanta over spring break to compete in the Emory University Invitational. The team returns home for its first northern meet at North Central on April 2.
